Article Overview - Abercrombie River NP
This trek is located in the Central Tablelands region of New South Wales and offers the visitor some moderate four-wheel driving, and picturesque camping sites beside the Abercrombie River and Silent Creek. View Full Article...
Has anyone ever been to Abercrombie River? Any recommendations on camping sites? We will have 4 adults - no children and prefer quiet secluded spots with minimal contact of other people. We are not mean but just like to really get away from the rat race of Sydney! We don't mind a bit of a trek getting there! Cheers.

I wrote a trek note for Abercrombie a few months ago and is located in the 'trek' section. It gives a rundown of camping sites etc.

Enjoy the park, it is one of our favourites.

Good trek notes Landy. I will lob in a vote for The Sink as a great campsite. Good spot for the kids with lots of creek to explore, Wombats at night, etc.

Good Campsite on the Abercrombie River and you can get away from other people easily enough as there is plenty of room.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

We are headed that way later this year and I have already pencilled in the co-ords you posted but I think that that spot is a bit away from the ARNP, or have I got it wrong again ?

Very dry out there at the moment, well it was at easter anyway.
They seem to have missed out on the coastal rain, no water in the creeks and very little in the river.

I wasn't actually there, a good friend was and I was just passing on his comments.
I would imagine that it would be pretty dry as it is usually the first to dry out and its catchment is to the west.
He commented that the whole park was really dry and dusty.

I was there just 10 days ago for a three day break. Didn't see anyone during that time (weekdays + Saturday).

The park is incredibly dry; there is absolutely no water at Silent Creek, The Beach has only pools remaining (no flowing water) and crossing the Retreat River at Mack's Flat doesn't wet the tyres. At The Beach, you can watch the fish floating in schools near the surface - some are 40-50cm long. I didn't check out The Sink.

Silent Creek has the most space if you're looking for a remote spot and is very sheltered; The Beach is pleasant and you can seclude yourself away in various locations by the river; its official camp ground is a quite open and visible. The Sink has enough area to provide reasonable privacy

Enjoy the park. It's still very peaceful despite its dryness; cold at night though - around 0C or below and the sun doesn't reach your camp site until mid morning. It's very accessible from Sydney too.

regards,
Peter
