Greg
Gidday all,
Planning a trip to
Fraser Island towards the end of August, start September and was wondering
1/ do I need to book any camping sites
2/ Is there any fishing comps etc on that I need to avoid
3/ Your preferred spot, not your secret spot!
4/ Anything else, how long is that lump of string?
We will be tenting/swagging for about 7 days.
I don't like to be organised, that's what my wife tells me, hence the
camp site question and we are trying to avoid the crowds.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers
Greg

half your luck mate. we were there last october. stayed at cathederal beach in cabins. really good price and a big 4 discount if you are a member. plus its off the beach and away from the sand. the dogs can be a problem around
camp sites at times so keep all food, esky and rubbish
well secured. i think a fair bit of beach was lost during the recent storms so the beach camping may be limited. locals will know more.
enjoy it - we may not be able to go to these
places for much longer.

You will need to book a
campsite. You have a couple of options; regulated sites like
Waddy Point, Cathederal Beach etc or you can book for "beach camping" which allows you to
camp in any of the designated beach camping areas on a first come, first served basis. The EPA website
Fraser Island map shows the allowed areas.
My personal favorite is the Marloo site, just north of
Waddy Point.
The Fraser Fishing Comp is at the end of May so that won't be an issue. August/September should be a nice quiet time.

Greg and Family
We did the trip in March 07 (wife +2) and wrongly spent only 3 days on the island - but had a fantastic time.
Depending on how much security the family wants, depends on where to stay. We stuck to designated areas with showers and loos.
Stay at
Central Station - awesome rainforest, clear water creeks, plenty of wild life at night - we are guessing owls at night!
Cathedral Beach (Big 4) was also safe and had hot showers.
There is camping all along the beach in designated areas - no power, no showers etc, but a real experience.
Tip for lake McKenzie - get there first thing in the morning. We got up from
Central Station and drove straight there and had the place to ourselves. The tour buses start to arrive from about 9-10am and they come in droves.
We only got up to
Indian Head but the whole 3 days, we saw no dingos (a bit disappointed - kids saw lots of tracks).
Research track conditions - some were closed when we were there.
Have a great trip - you will love it!

Gidday Jayco19,
Did you book your sites or did you just wing it?
Cheers

Hey Greg
We booked the first night at
Central Station, only because we were not sure of the area, how many people around, distances and track conditions. We booked online and knew we didn't have to fuss around the first night.

Nice private sites, raised, own table on most, pay for hot showers, fully fenced compound to keep out the Dingos - beautiful rainforest...

Huge park, will not have trouble finding a site here.
The island is big enough to wing it..
Have a blast.....we will be going back sometime in the future for sure....

While there are no fishing comps on in August/September it is the middle of the "fishing season" and it will be fairly busy even outside school holidays. That said, you'll have no real trouble with the crowds as the island is huge.
If you definitely want to avoid crowds and are able to rough it without facilities then I'd probably suggest beach camping and give yourself about an hour to drive up and down in your "target" area looking for a good, secluded spot.
