half your luck mate. we were there last october. stayed at cathederal beach in cabins. really good price and a big 4 discount if you are a member. plus its off the beach and away from the sand. the dogs can be a problem around camp sites at times so keep all food, esky and rubbish well secured. i think a fair bit of beach was lost during the recent storms so the beach camping may be limited. locals will know more.

You will need to book a campsite. You have a couple of options; regulated sites like Waddy Point, Cathederal Beach etc or you can book for "beach camping" which allows you to camp in any of the designated beach camping areas on a first come, first served basis. The EPA websiteFraser Island map shows the allowed areas.

My personal favorite is the Marloo site, just north of Waddy Point.
The Fraser Fishing Comp is at the end of May so that won't be an issue. August/September should be a nice quiet time.

We did the trip in March 07 (wife +2) and wrongly spent only 3 days on the island - but had a fantastic time.
Depending on how much security the family wants, depends on where to stay. We stuck to designated areas with showers and loos.
Stay at Central Station - awesome rainforest, clear water creeks, plenty of wild life at night - we are guessing owls at night!
Cathedral Beach (Big 4) was also safe and had hot showers.

There is camping all along the beach in designated areas - no power, no showers etc, but a real experience.

Tip for lake McKenzie - get there first thing in the morning. We got up from Central Station and drove straight there and had the place to ourselves. The tour buses start to arrive from about 9-10am and they come in droves.

We only got up to Indian Head but the whole 3 days, we saw no dingos (a bit disappointed - kids saw lots of tracks).

Research track conditions - some were closed when we were there.

While there are no fishing comps on in August/September it is the middle of the "fishing season" and it will be fairly busy even outside school holidays. That said, you'll have no real trouble with the crowds as the island is huge.
If you definitely want to avoid crowds and are able to rough it without facilities then I'd probably suggest beach camping and give yourself about an hour to drive up and down in your "target" area looking for a good, secluded spot.
