This I know about! I have a 1993 GQ Patrol 4.2l EFI, the Tyre Placard in my glovebox stipulates that I must have an Srated tyre=180kph, which I assume you have as well. After searching through numerous catalogues, talking to tyre Retailers and Nissan, the Bridgestone Desert Dueller is one the very few brands that make an S rated tyre. If you put an R rated tyre=170kph you can get away with it legally if you place an RTA sticker on your windscreen saying you have a less than recommended speed rating tyre. Desert Dueller have just released an S rated Mud Terrain as well. So the answer to your question is Yes you can put Desert Duellers on your Patrol as long as the Tyre Placard stipulates an S rating or less. I run Desert Duellers on my vehicle because they are legal.

Dave, I too ran into this problem with my Prado. I contacted my insurance company (RAC Tasmania) and their response was that providing the weight carrying capacity was not reduced then the speed rating was not important provided (again) that the tyres were rated for above legal speeds. I fitted a set with an N rating, (140 kph, Goodyear Wranglers AT/S) and have had no problems in 6,000 kilometres. Hope this helps.
