Ok my opinion:

Split it into sections. A section to talk to your mates, waffle on, talk about flags, general chat etc. and a section for what I think this forum was originally intended for, travelling, 4wdriving, geography. - and I do generalise here and it is a compromise.

Say I notice thread that has interest to me. Say I do not have anything (or do not like, or do not have time) to contribute anything. After couple of days I like to see what been added to thread of interest. But it became mammoth task to dig it out from heaps of new posts. What are your suggestions? Search works awful it is easier to look through, rather then search. Notice thread number or bookmark each thread of interest? Then I will spend way too much time in forum (well, probably this is exact intention :-)))).

Also if I like to sears say for “Toyota 80 series aftermarket turbo” then again search is very little of help and if we have “Toyota 80 series engine” section task became much easier.

There is another solution – you know cat always can be skinned in more then one way. When creation new topic we can ask poster to choose from preset categories. And later when we look through we can select particular category or all of them if we wish. Categories can be organize in tree manner, thus selecting particular category automatically select all sub categories. It will be heaps better then search if we follow rules. Just select say Travel and Simpson Desert” and bingo – all relevant threads here.

We have already built the category based system and it has been running for ages. Currently it is accessed via the articles on the system and is indexed by the moderators manually. So if you want to read about the Simpson Desert - then go to the Simpson Desert trek note and go to the Feedback system as it is directly linked to the forum. This is the case for every article page on ExplorOz. I have to enable the ability to see all of the threads related to each article however you can easily see the the most recent 5, I will be adding a drop down list of article threads in the forum when I get a chance.

I agree Roger, plenty of more specific sites to get detailed information than ExOz. For example ask a question on diff problems in 100 series Landcruisers & you'll get 3 helpful replies but as many as 10 Nissan owners bagging them & a dozen chatting off topic. Post the same thread on the lcool site & you'll get 20 helpful replies with technical advice, photos & offers to come around and help.
The beauty of this site is as you say, allot of general information all under the one roof & has one of the better forums for chatting about nothing in particular :-)
