Anyone ever talk about split this forum?

Submitted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 at 16:07

Member - Serg (VIC)

Indeed – so huge mixture and so many different and unrelated one to other posts – easy to get lost. Why do not split it by sections – travel, tyres, electrics, mechanics etc. We can even create special one for fuel price discussion LOL. Also in mechanical sections can be split by models and makes. It makes to search relevant topic so much easier! Thus we can much easy reuse old threads instead of duplicating them again and again.

Cheers

For me one of the great things about this forum is that it raises issues I might not have thought would interest me.

It forces me to think about things that I may not otherwise and provides me with information I did not know I needed.

You still get to choose which threads you open and become involved with.

Welcome Serg,

I have only been a member for short while, but have always followed the forum. We love it the way it is as you read articles that you might not normally look at. It has taught us so much about places and issues we don't even think of sometimes.
By having it open like this you never miss a discussion and if you are searching for something in particular you can always do a search on that topic.

I believe that people who may want the forum split, may be less likely to reply to this post. People who have done so in previous posts of this nature have had strips torn off them.

Therefore I do not believe you can claim a majority, at least in this thread.

Ok my opinion:

Split it into sections. A section to talk to your mates, waffle on, talk about flags, general chat etc. and a section for what I think this forum was originally intended for, travelling, 4wdriving, geography. - and I do generalise here and it is a compromise.

Hiya Serg, unlike other sites that only offer Forums for interacting, we also offer Blogs which do indeed offer the sort of topic splits that you are looking for. As these are only new (few weeks) and the site has been around for 8 years, the Blog content has a bit of catching up to do but even so far, there's lots of interesting stuff being slotted into the various categories. Now you're a member, you can even make a blog... and start a trend of your own.

Hi David,

I see what you saying, but probably you miss my point. I try to explain it by example.

Say I notice thread that has interest to me. Say I do not have anything (or do not like, or do not have time) to contribute anything. After couple of days I like to see what been added to thread of interest. But it became mammoth task to dig it out from heaps of new posts. What are your suggestions? Search works awful it is easier to look through, rather then search. Notice thread number or bookmark each thread of interest? Then I will spend way too much time in forum (well, probably this is exact intention :-)))).

Also if I like to sears say for “Toyota 80 series aftermarket turbo” then again search is very little of help and if we have “Toyota 80 series engine” section task became much easier.

There is another solution – you know cat always can be skinned in more then one way. When creation new topic we can ask poster to choose from preset categories. And later when we look through we can select particular category or all of them if we wish. Categories can be organize in tree manner, thus selecting particular category automatically select all sub categories. It will be heaps better then search if we follow rules. Just select say Travel and Simpson Desert” and bingo – all relevant threads here.

Thanks
Serg

Serg,

Michelle wrote your email but as an initial reply use Thread Watch on threads that interest you. This is a member feature and works very well. Just enable thread watch in the threads you are interested in and you will receive email alerts and be able to get a forum result list of just your watched threads (access this from your My Home page and select Watched Threads).

We have already built the category based system and it has been running for ages. Currently it is accessed via the articles on the system and is indexed by the moderators manually. So if you want to read about the Simpson Desert - then go to the Simpson Desert trek note and go to the Feedback system as it is directly linked to the forum. This is the case for every article page on ExplorOz. I have to enable the ability to see all of the threads related to each article however you can easily see the the most recent 5, I will be adding a drop down list of article threads in the forum when I get a chance.

Have a look at The Overlander Forum. Get into the Campfire section. It's a mob of dim witted losers posting dull one liners all the time. Some of these dills have post counts of 20,000 over a few years.

And there is almost no moderation because it would be simply to hard.

I agree Roger, plenty of more specific sites to get detailed information than ExOz. For example ask a question on diff problems in 100 series Landcruisers & you'll get 3 helpful replies but as many as 10 Nissan owners bagging them & a dozen chatting off topic. Post the same thread on the lcool site & you'll get 20 helpful replies with technical advice, photos & offers to come around and help.
The beauty of this site is as you say, allot of general information all under the one roof & has one of the better forums for chatting about nothing in particular :-)
