we stayed at LORNE STATION 5ks out of lightning ridge they have powered and non powered sites or cabins there bore water was quite drinkableand fires allowed on your site when we were there they bought the rocks and wood to you and if you are there on saturday night and like the shadows allen might play and sing a song and they have a walking tour of the property and shown areas where you can have a scratch around to look for opal(about 18mths ago a woman took $20000 of opal out of the box at tourist info box)also worth a drive around the opal fields about 60ks away (sheepyard i think ) they had a very good memorial for the vets out there and some outstanding pubs

We stayed at Lorne Station about a month ago, cost now is $12.00 non power and $18.00 power, good kitchen / hospitality there, will be going back for the festival in July, but think it may be a bit cool then, had a good time and look forward to returning.

We went there last year but drove out as it appeared to be lots of red dirt and no where good to camp. Seemed a bit run down.

Just as well as it bucketed down the next two nights and we would have drowned in the mud.

Just wandering if we had the right place ? I must admit we wimped put and stayed in the motel as it was in the mid 40 degrees until it started to thunder and rain.


Make sure you do the pub crawl through the mining fields mentioned above - there are 3 pubs and you can stop off at them doing a big loop.

But allow plenty of time as you will spend lots of time talking to the friendly locals there.


Lightning Ridge is a great place.
