gu wiring problem

Submitted: Sunday, Dec 02, 2001 at 00:00

eric

I have a 2001 gu 3.0 td, with driving lamps fitted. The relay is tripped off of the high beam so as to operate only when the high beam is operating and therefore legal. Seems to wrrk allright, with ample cable dimension, however I noticed that the fuel gauge is being affected ( shows low levels when actually full)since I have fitted the lights.I can't seem to find the problem and don't think that the high beam and fuel gauge would be using the same relay. Any solutions or ideas?? Thanks in anticipation.

Eric, check the earth wire(s)! Is it the same dimentions as the positive wire and does it run back to the battery? These two things can make an incredible difference. It is also a good idea to earth the relay to the battery directly using the same size wire (at least 4mm or preferably 6mm), depending on load. Let me know how you go. Cheers

Thanks Peter, it was the earth wire from the relay causing the problem, wiring it direct to battery has fixed problem. Thanks again.

I have same vehicle with rally 4000's fitted. I dont have any problems. Fuel guage is fine.

The relay is powered off a headlight plug adapter (no cut wires) and the lamps are powered and earthed directly to the battery.

If you wish to compare notes on our vehicles you can email me on sdavis@octa4.net.au
