Caravan tyre protection during storage

Submitted: Sunday, Jun 01, 2008 at 14:21

Turist

Our dual wheel caravan is "stored" (left uncovered in the back yard) between trips - any suggestions on the best treatment for the tyres to help get maximum life out of them. I dont think the tread will wear out but the side walls could fail first. Any one suggest a good coating to minimise the effect of sun on the rubber?

We always jack our up, not actualy lift the wheels off the surface, but just take most of the weight on blocks. We have a van cover which keeps the sun off.

Keep them completely out of the sun when not in use. Apparently life of a tyre (before it starts to deteriorate/component breakdown) is about 4 - 5 yrs.

I've been using CRC So-Easy One Step Tyre Care on a regular basis (each time I clean the vehicle, & after an extended trip away) for quite a few years now... Camper & trailer t yres are treated at least 2 - 3 times a year... D@mn good stuff, IMO..

I have t yres on my ol' box trailer which must be pushin' 20 years old, and there are no apparent signs of any "perishing" or cracking.. Trailer is full-time exposed to the elements..

The original t yres off my Patrol (which now get used on the C/T) are 9 years old, and apart from tread wear, look as new..

When my C/T & box trailer are not being used for extended periods, I take the weight off the t yres..
