Fitting a KleenOil bypass filter

Well, I have just finished fitting a Kleenoil bypass filter to my 1HZ Landcruiser. First problem for me is that SWMBO will not allow me to drill any holes anywhere. (This is a legacy from my (our) first Shorty back in the ‘70s which ended up like a sieve as I fitted and later discarded all sorts of accessories). It took a couple of days to fabricate a mounting bracket using existing holes under the bonnet. The only other alteration was to re-bend the mountings for the brake vacuum tank to make a bit more room. With the filter installation itself - The return hose goes to a fitting threaded into the oil filler cap – (remember not allowed to drill into the rocker cover). The supply to the filter comes off the oil pressure sender. I thought I had found it but when I unscrewed it green stuff came out – try again. Finally found the sender below and to the rear of the filter. When I removed it and fitted the supplied adaptor there was no room to refit the sender unit as it now fouled the starter motor. I used an 1/8th NTP elbow to get the sender into a better position. Assembly of the hoses and all other fittings as supplied were spot on. I ran the engine for 15 mins, no leaks appeared and the return oil line got warm so it seems to be working. With the price of oil going up so much I should hopefully cut back changes from 5k to 30k a savings of 83% on engine oil.

It was just over $300 COD from Aust supplier for the complete kit including a four pack of extra filters. Thanks for the offer but no, I don't want to do yours. I could down a couple of tinnies while watching you though. One thing I didn't mention above was that part of the hose coupling was a reverse thread, my son watched me turning things the wrong way for a while before he told me - LOL.

From experience.......

Could I suggest that you maybe consider also fitting a warning buzzer to the oil pressure switch? Now that you have external oil lines etc, there is the "possibility" (it happened to me and I've heard of it happening to others) that something could come adrift (eg: a split hose etc) and you could dump all your oil before noticing the red light on your dash. The buzzer would come on whenever the red light is on (including when you first turn the ignition on every time). If this latter point is going to concern you, you could what I've done and fit a momentary contact switch as well. I'm now in a routine whereby I press down the switch when I start the motor, until I see the red light go out.

Cheers

Roachie

Strongly agree with Roachies comments, I personally know two acquaintances that have destroyed their 1HZ engines after oil lines to external filters have dumped the sump contents out on the road.
One of them was travelling at approx 100kph, by the time he stopped the engine was toast.

Peter, and Roachie,
I think the later 1Hz have the low oil level warning light (sensor fitted to the side of the sump). But its not as good as a buzzer. If I had my way, all cars would have buzzer warning for water temp, level and oil.

Hi Mikee5
I fitted a bypass filter to my 2H 1984 Landcruiser around 1988. I forget how much it cost or where I got it from but it wouldn’t have been very much given my financial circumstances at the time. I first saw the filter at a Melbourne motor show and I think the unit came from Brisbane. I’ve done 300K since then, mostly towing with a van with an all up mass of 4100 Kg. Bit disappointed on my 10Km trip last year – I had to put in a litre of oil on the way back. I change oil every 10Km and use two toilet rolls (recycled paper) in the filter. I got diesel/gas fitted 18 months ago and it's supposed to run a cleaner motor so I may start changing oil every 15K.By the way the old 2H cuts out if it loses oil pressure.
