Gday Peter,, i have the 2.3TD in mine & had a similar problem which caused masses of smoke to pour out the back while under load, gutless performance & use oil to the tune of 1litre per 20 klm,, everyone told me it was the rings & it was knackered & i'd be up for $3K for a low K engine,, turned out to be the turbo seal & i had a spare turbo from a wreck in the shed, which fixed the problem,,,,for free!!
May not be your solution, but it may be worth checking other possibilities before hauling out a mighty pajero engine that at 350,000k's is only just bedding in for a lifetime of trouble-fee service?

some people put switches in their diesels to create black smoke.
So you are ahead of some

black smoke means unburnt fuel ...
probably an airflow/temperature/boost problem and/or turbo.
Injectors are only responsible when they allow too much flow
I don't know the Pajeros so would not have a tip.

The fact that you have fitted new glow plugs and it is still hard to start would indicate worn rings . As Footy said get a compression test
