intermittent clunk

Hi,
I am trying to find the source of an intermittent clunk in my 80 series. It seems to be from the driveline rear and happens occasionally when slowing down and turning right. I have kept the grease up to all uni's and slip joints and have new oil in both diffs and transfer case. I am starting to think it could be the 'floating' rear discs or brake pads. All uni's have been replaced last year and are still in good nic. It's an auto if that is of any help.

Could be your CV joints if it is happening when turning.

It's not the CV's as I have checked them and they are fine as well. It seems to be coming from the back of the vehicle.

I've had the tail shaft replaced already on my 07 D4D.

yep my 07 D4D, does the same. seems toyota know about it. I will get round to getting them have alook @ it. they advise will not effect performance. ??
my business partner's new 200 series D4D does the same.

Common problem in the 95 series too. My'n does it every now and then but have been told to keep the grease up to it. Apparantly the splines bind together and doesnt slip back and forth like they should. Toyota supposidly trialing a new type to rectify the problem in the 120 series. Doesnt affect anything just annoying. Regards Steve M

If it's coming from the rear when turning;

1. Is there anything loose in the back of the vehicle, jack, tyrelevers toolbox etc. I know it is obvious but!

2. Check the rear suspension bushes particularly those that locate the rear axle assembly. Wear there can cause all sorts of noises.

3. Check for axle freeplay as it could be rear hub bearings on the way out.

I have re greased the rear wheel bearings and adjusted to spec.

Could be the rear bushes as you mentioned. Similar noise to when you tap the disc with a hammer.more of a ting rather than a clunk...bit hard to describe.

It did it last night when slowing to a right hand turn under brakes, upon releasing brakes and just before accelerating round the roundabout a ting noise is heard...but then it may not do it for weeks....got me stuffed at the moment. I will get it on a hoist and check those susp bushes.

can you initiate the clunk by manually changing down, that is, eliminating the auto change down?....just a thought

Does an 80 series have leafs? Often these type of clunks can be spring movt. on the bush. just another possibility to check.

Hi robnicko, strange things does an 80 series,the drive train is always making some sort of noise in mine nothing major. The tink noise could be rear axle hub collets/studs I've broken a few over the years mainly carrying a lot of weight for work.

This happened to a mate of mine. He thought it was a CV though it turned out it was a bump stop for the exhaust had fallen off and the exhaust was knocking when turning. About $40 to replace.

hi Robniko my 80 had a clunk sound coming from the back i spent a while looking for it then a friend come over and found the front shock top rubber was missing passenger side quick fix hope yours is the same

due to recent financial difficulties, the light at the end of the tunnel has been shut off until further notice
