hi anyone fitted a turbo boost gauge and oil pressure gauge to a 4.2 td gu . is it difficult. can the boost and oil be fitted without drilling into ..eg the manafold..

recentely rang nissan aust (dandenong) about 5th gear failure still no clear picture .they could not give me any precise info as to which model ,year ,or range effected but indicated they would look favorably at any claim even out of warranty period. admitted there had been some problems.

Hello Bill,
can't help about the gauges but it is a worry about the 5th gear problem. Are they going to sort it out if it goes in the middle of the CSR or up the Gibb river Rd?
I hope so but it is a worry as I will be up there when the danger period is up for my GU.

Sounds like the gearbox and clutch problems need to be seriously addressed by Nissan.. Ive heard the 5th gear problem is mainly for the 4.2 when towing. My dealer just told me not to use 5th when towing (2.8td). So who knows??

That statement Proved that dealers don't know what they are talking about as the 2.8 has a totally different gearbox and it is not subject to the problem....!

The problem was introduced with the launch of the series 2 as they introduced the 3.0L engine to cater for more power/torque, the people who manufacture the gears suffed up with the tolerances, problem was resolved in november 2001.

Nissan should recall those vehicles 3.0L and 4.2s are affected.

That would mean admitting a problem, and shootin resale and possible new car sales in the bum!

They wont admit theres a problem.

and you shouldnt use 5th for towing much anyway.. Although my holden 90 model rodeo had 300,000klms with at least 100,000 of it towing never had a problem!

Can't help you with the torbo boost but I just fitted a backup thermo & oil pressure kit from Rotronics. It runs a check on the circuits before startup & has an audible alarm + lights if settings go to alarm. Did it for peace of mind so you can enjoy the drive without having to scan the instruments every couple of ks.Carpe Diem

$377 and I fitted it.
It all comes as a big harnessed set. Just a matter of laying the wires & boxes out and screwing a few bits into place. I run a GU td and really wanted that peace of mind as a backup particularly in the outback. temps & o/p can be critical in diesels & I figured it's a lot cheaper than a new block.
Rotronics have a new website under construction. Contact: Rod Street, Rotronics Brisbane. Search Google also.
If you need a hand let me know but I'll be in the Kimberly for 7 wks from nxt mond. Carpe Diem

Boost gauge can "T" into the line to the waste gate. (the small pipe on the cross-over manifold). 5th gear was first reported in 4.2 models, not the 3 litre although both are effected as they share the same box. Early, about year 2000 have had the trouble. Retified, October 2001. Can fail with NO towing, as mine did at around 65000km. Usually long periods of fifth, eg, Nullabor plain. Oil gauge, "T" behind existing oil sender unit.
