I lashed out and bought the Hema Navigator (thanks to everyone who contributed their thoughts to thread 59359)

So last night I take it out of the box find all the bits that are supposed to be included, so far so good.

Plug it in to start charging it. No problems there.

Stuff lights up, quite colourful, nice!

Next thing it informs me it's searching for satellites...... good luck I thinks to myself, it's got no hope.
I was sitting in the middle of my lounge room in Fairfield Melbourne. Brick walls, flat steel roof and aluminium venetians on all the windows, (closed because it was bitterly cold, remember I live in FNQ most of the time)

Bugger me dead, it then tells me it has a lock etc etc etc and the pretty red dot comes up with where I live.
Pretty bl##dy amazing I thought.

I remember my last GPS which I bought about 12 years ago, you had to stand outside with it held high up, no trees or buildings nearby and then eventually you'd get a fix if there wasn't too much cloud. the error factor was about 300 metres.

Amazing the difference 12 years makes!!!

Now if 4Wd's had progressed the same in the 12 years we'd have a car that cost $15.000 with a 500cc diesel with 300kw and 800nm that got 1litre/100k and could carry 3000kg.

Makes you think doesn't it!

Troppo,

You will have to give a review of your experience using Route 66 for city navigation.
(We know how good OziExplorer is)

Also, if it successfully runs both Ozi and Route 66 at the same time, with the ability to swap back and forth.

Gives me a warning around Mt. Macedon that this is only a partially digitised area and that driving instruction might be wrong but it got me home.

Impressive unit.

I received my Hema Navigator this morning so turned it on to see what it was like. It locked in quickly to the required Satellite's, I think a bit slower than my Garmin 7200 but still OK.

I was about to go shopping so thought I would give Route 66 a try. I was located in Mount Hutton (Newcastle Suburb) and it immediately flashed a warning that it had only partially digitised data for this area. I attempted to tell it to go to Belmont but it did not know Belmont but could find Swansea. As we drove it was evident that the Route 66 maps are very incomplete in this area and it cannot be compared to Garmin City Navigator.

I selected Ozi Explorer and it loaded slowly but eventually came up and showed a basic map of the area. At 100% magnification there was very little detail. At 200% there was blurring which was uncomfortable. I am heading to Halls Creek tomorrow so it will get a good workout on that trip. When it gets into the remote area, the Hema maps will probably present better.

Would I buy Route 66 again, definitely not, it cannot be compared with City Navigator. The value in Hema Navigator has to lie in Ozi explorer and the Hema Maps.

Please keep all of us updated with the various working of the unit.
Especially if it runs the navigator as well as the moving map at the same time.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.
