Legalities of changing tyres

I’m about to change my Landcruisers’ 100 series tyres from the standard 275/70 to BFG 285/75 A/T. I saw a warning in a book, about difficulties with the insurance and the manufacturer warranty. The problem as described in the book was with the speed rating of the tyres. Anybody has information about the issue?

Does that mean you are changing to a larger sized tyre? I thought the BF Goodrich A/T came in the same size as the original tyres. If so why don't you do that?

The original tyres for the 100 is Dunlop 275/70/16. The BFGs are 285/75/16 so they are taller and wider.

I recently (yesterday) had new BFG's fitted to my vehicle, the RTA (NSW) said the driving height can only be increased by a certain amount before it was considered a defect and unregisterable and most importantly it would also void the insurance if this is the case.

The difference between the two is around 21 mm (rolling radius) so you should be OK. Make sure to notify your insurer and have the new tyres endorsed on your policy.

Eli : Have you ever considered buying a new Landcruiser then you wont have to think about new tyres for a while !! There are a lot of dick heads who keep asking the same question on this Forum and in doing so there will be one less!! Give it a go !
