some time ago i posted that my patrol had a whistling noise,i took the vehicle to nissan dealership to have factory trained mechanics fix it.it was in the shop for 8 days they diagnosed defective turbo needing replacement $1500 plus,i could not see anything wrong with it so took the turbo to another place for second opinion they confirmed turbo fine was reassembled by nissan, just the same noise, took it to another mechanic he removed turbo found a blown exhaust gasket and two broken manifold studs.
The point is nissan falsly diagnosed faulty turbo, and reinstalled the faulty gasket that they found but did not disclose.
Presented the evidence to the nissan manager he agreed they had reinstalled the faulty gasket and that their mechanic caused lots of problems and had since been dismissed.....absolutely beyond belief.....

Unfortunately, not beyond belief. You did the right thing by seeking a second (and third) opinion, most people don't.

The third mechanic is a gem, don't loose his number.

So disappointing. Just another nail in the coffin.........

Were they incompetent or were they crooks i.e. trying to extract every last cent they could from you??

My guess is they didn't even look at it.

I would have the 3rd mechanics # on speed dial.

Cheers Steve.

I had the same symptoms on my patrol, it was diagnosed and fixed by Nissan under warranty with no dramas at all. Just my 2c worth based on my personal experience with my Nissan dealer.

The nissan dealer sent the turbo to a turbo specialist and claimed the specialist condemmed the turbo i asked to meet with the specialist and did he confirmed he returned my original turbo as advised nissan there was nothing wrong with it.In my opinion i caught the nissan staff deliberately lying to extract a large bill unnecessarily.....when i fronted the manager with the facts he agreed to no payment....

I only have experience with Holden and their dealerships.

Most dealerships are franchised operations and whilst tied to particular marques, are independently owned and operated.

In the case of Holden, if a customer is not happy with a dealer, they can report a problem they have experienced to the Customer Assistance Centre and Holden will look into it, if only to protect their "brand name" interests. I assume other vehicle manufacturers/importers would be similar.

In extreme cases, the manufacturer may withdraw their dealership licence from an operator.
