Hi Joe,
We are just back from a trip to the Kimberely and
Pilbara. the
Kimberley was great but we probably enjoyed the
Pilbara even more, and are keen to get back there for a longer look. Mining is so big (and interesting) that tourism has not yet taken off and so in a way now is a good time to go there before tourism becomes too commercial. The area around
Marble Bar was great, and the drive from there to Gt Northern Hway via Hillside very scenic. Karajini was spectacular though much of it a bit beyond our fitness level. Saw the most amazing display of S. Desert Peas going into
Python Pool, and down the railway line from
Karratha. But we also enjoyed seeing the mining and industrial development, getting some idea of what its all about. The Burrup Pen. with industry and ancient rock art side by side was unique. Fortunately bush
camping opportunities were plentiful (unlike say the GRR) because caravan parks were very expensive. For sheer scenic beauty I think the
Pilbara is wonderful.
Val.
