The Pilbara region is a brilliant part of Western Australia, quietly speaking it is a secret that should be spoken about so more people come to see and experience the wonders of the Pilbara, before it's dug up and shipped off to China, sadly the mining will only get worse (increase) under the present state leadership, this is purely my personal opinion, but I've only lived here (Newman) for twenty years.

You are spot on! We loved the Pilbara when we came through on our trip around the block. Stayed in Newman and enjoyed our time there.
My son has just taken a job with a company in Pannawonika, and will be heading over in a week or two. He is looking forward to it, and hoping to get hold of a 4WD to have a look around on his time off.

I just returned from my Pilbara trip.We spent 3 weeks up there and realy enjoyed ourselves.It is an area that has a lot to offer if people would only spend the time to check it out.I will be back for another visit as soon as i can.

couldn't agree more. Also, the Pilbara is much more than just the Karijini area, which is all that many tourists visit. Is good scenery etc around Newman to explore - though some of that seems to be mine affected now. There is that Fortescue swamp area, too. We worked on the FMG Railway project for a while (sorry - but money too good to pass up) and the scenery around the Rail Villages, especially RV2, was wonderful. And the sunsets, cloud formations in the storm season......Used to think the Kimberley was the best part of Aust., but now think the Pilbara equals it.

I didn't mean to sound like I was mining company bashing, seeing that it was mining that bought me into Newman originally.
Yes the money is good, very good actually, but there lies the Devil itself.
It's just sad to see all the "Satellite" ore bodies being opened up into full production mode, when the main ore bodies in the region are still boasting life spans of twenty to thirty years still to go.

But I'm getting away from the original few words on the Forum page. The Pilbara is a remarkable place indeed, shame about the world needing it more than you and I do !!

Hi Joe,

We are just back from a trip to the Kimberely and Pilbara. the Kimberley was great but we probably enjoyed the Pilbara even more, and are keen to get back there for a longer look. Mining is so big (and interesting) that tourism has not yet taken off and so in a way now is a good time to go there before tourism becomes too commercial. The area around Marble Bar was great, and the drive from there to Gt Northern Hway via Hillside very scenic. Karajini was spectacular though much of it a bit beyond our fitness level. Saw the most amazing display of S. Desert Peas going into Python Pool, and down the railway line from Karratha. But we also enjoyed seeing the mining and industrial development, getting some idea of what its all about. The Burrup Pen. with industry and ancient rock art side by side was unique. Fortunately bush camping opportunities were plentiful (unlike say the GRR) because caravan parks were very expensive. For sheer scenic beauty I think the Pilbara is wonderful.
