Not that I wish to promote the usual tyre debate but I thought I would bring this to the attention of the forum as I know there are a few others who have just fitted Dick Cepek FC II tyres.

I fitted three of these at Alice Springs having carried them as spares on July's desert trip. They did the Ghan Heritage trail, the Simpson, Walkers Crossing Track and trip south to Melbourne via Tibooburra. They also did the recent Kulkyne Trip. In all, less than 5000 klicks and bought in June this year.

On inspection while cleaning the car, I found a radial crack going right round two of the tyres just above the bead. The crack was just below the rim line meaning you had to peer past the lip of the rim to detect it. Cracking occurred on both inside and outside of the tyre.

I spoke with an engineer from one of the major tyre manufacturers who I know personally and he took a look and said it had to be a compound or construction issue being so low on the tyre. The tyres were replaced immediately by Micky Thomson who's rep stated he'd never seen a radial crack that low in the tyres before.

I have refitted a full complement of FC II's and will keep an eye on them. Just thought I'd mention if for the attention of other forumites.

Cheers

Mick

I had similar issues with four out of five Cooper STT's. The radial crack was just on the edge of the rim. But because I had done 30,000km with them Cooper Tires would only come to the party at Cost including fitting. The next set of Coopers I destroyed on an offtrack adventure....LOL What was left of those tyres with 20,000km on them I swapped for a slab of beer.

Cheers

Don't be too hard on the stakes ... I drove from Mungo Nat Park via Pooncarie, Menindee, Broken Hill and Dubbo with a stake in my tyre a few weeks ago and it got me home to Cessnock.

Reason was that nobody could supply me with tyres at those aforementioned locations, so I had little choice but to "press on".

When I got home and bought new tyres, there was this tidy little stake protruding inside the tyre, but holding the air in quite well. Saved me a couple of tyre strings, which it would have taken had I decided to pull it out.

Nothing like a bit of "outback-ability" at times :)
