2004 RA Rodeo 3.0 TDi Fuel Consumption?!

Pacey1

I've just purchased a preloved 2004 RA Rodeo Space Cab 3.0 Turbo Diesel & it's using a bucket load of fuel.
I just completed my first short journey in it (only 440km - down SW WA & back) & was absolutely staggered when I put 94 litres of diesel back in to fill it up!! This is nearly twice what I was expecting the consumption to be - over 21 litres per 100km!
Before anyone asks the obvious, yes it was filled right up prior to the trip & yes it does have a long range tank in it so it will hold about 130 litres.
I've checked & changed the air filter because it was a bit second hand but I doubt that alone has caused the problem.
I've only had the car a week & never owned a diesel before but it didn't seem to have any problems maintaining highway speeds with only a motorbike on the back. It doesn't blow smoke, use oil or make any bad rattly noises in the engine so I'm at a bit of a loss to explain it.
Has anyone had any fuel consumption issues like this & know what caused them? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yep - if the motor is the same as the 3.0TD I had in the Jack (or similar) it should be giving you about 11L/100k (unladen, very light footed driver) up to about 13L/100km (fully loaded, but still driven with a light foot) - taking it simplistically, if there is no leak, the extra fuel has to be going out the exhaust and probably in the form of black smoke..... can someone check for you while mobile ?
