Hi. I've been considering setting up a real emergency box, the type you grab if your car is on fire. I recall reading a thread some time ago on this topic but can't find it.

What do you recommend should be in this box: Sat phone? water? Torch?

I look forward to your thoughts. Cheers

1. Water
2 Sat phone
3 Jacket
4. Wallet
5. Camera
Zap them all into a soft rucksack/carry bag and leave under the passengers feet or if no passenger, on the seat. Easy to do a runner.
1 and 2 are self evident
3 is because you need shelter and warmth.
4, Self evident
5 . A camera ? Huh I hear you ask.
Well, heaven forbid should your vehicle burn out in the bush, you can attach pictures to the insurance claim :))

Food?
I also used to carry a quick snack. The chokky ones melted (new bag needed). Tried a few others but couldn't resist eating them. So if I have to sit and wait, I'll just have to go hungry...I could do with losing some weight anyway :)))

Friends were driving a VW bug across the Nullarbor, when they noticed smoke coming from the rear wheels.
Pulled over and stopped they found flames and had no way to douse them, tried sand - but no success.
Grabbing what they could out of the car before the flames got too hot, they moved to the other side of the road for shelter from the heat.
Fortunately one of the girls had a small camera and had taken some photos of the panic and efforts to put out the flames. Other photos of the vehicle burning over the shoulder of the road and the burnt out wreck established the circumstances sufficiently for the insurance company not to argue against the subsequent claim.
Yep; a camera is a good idea.
cheers

Sat Phone
Mobile Phone
Dynamo Torch/Radio
EPIRB
GPS Watch
Water
Food (dried fruit and museli bars)
Wallet with credit card and cash
Poncho/Groundsheet
First Aid Kit

This fits between the rear of the centre console and the rear wall of the cab. Plugged in to 12v power to keep sat, mobile phone and gps charged. Can be easily removed by lifting handle which unlocks the box from the console and unplugs from the power.

Cheers

Yep... you wouldn't want the fire extinquisher to burn!

That was my first thought.... make sure you CAN put the fire out!

Been following the thread and wondered when someone would get to the fire extinguisher. Our VW Kombi caught fire on the Finke - Kulgera road when a jerry can of petrol untied itself on the roof rack. It was mid summer and blowing a gale. I reckon static electricity lit the petrol. I grabbed the wife and kid first and had to come back for the fire extinguisher. Put the fire out and drove into the Kulgera Police Station. Spent a month in Alice Springs hospital.
I think you would have to practice with you grab bag to make it an instinctive reaction.

Thanks for the replies - as always some good thoughts. I have fire extinguishers in various locations.

The aim of the emergency pack is to allow quick action without too much thinking: "if I grab this bag I'll have the important stuff".

First aid kit
Emergency Space blankets
Heavy duty Garbage bags ( Wonderful things they carry water make solar stills provide rain protection and many other uses )
Now probably a new EPIRB and fire extinguishers ( several in various places )

If on a trip in dry areas water but water is available in some form in most areas.

I have an emergency backpack for SES callouts that has all manner of cool stuff in it including lollies ;-)

I suppose it would depend on where you are travelling but I like to also include a fire starter and a multitool. Maybe even a survival guide.

Kind regards

Camera very good. When he rolled the camper on the Savannah way AAMI wanted the shots and paid up with speed. Friends of ours were shocked when their near new Navara caught fire panic took over and the wallets went up with it as they were in the glove box not the handbag that got thrown out first. They had all sorts of trouble as you could imagine.

Hi KiwiAngler. Thanks for the photos - you're obviously very organised! I couldn't identify some of the items in the photo of your pack contents - would you be able to write a list?

Cheers
