Polycarbonate on the rear window

I went to buy some Polycarbonate from Bunnings the other day.
I wanted to get some to protect my rear window for my up coming trip. The bit I found was quite thin and flexible. Did I have the correct stuff or is there different sizes. Does size matter?
Does it go directly on the window or does it need to be a few mm off the glass?

Thanks

Moggs did a great job making it but he advised me to use 3M Twinlock which I have since. Cut the strips in three or four pieces. You can buy the strips at the larger Bunnings ot at places like Whitworths. They aren't cheap at about $9 per pack of four strips but are fantastic at holding on where Velcro is lightweight.

The guys selling me polycarbonate sold me on 3mm thickness, which is miles too heavy. You can use those semi-soft pads to keep the polycarbonate off the middle of the window.

Something to consider wato,

I went down the same track with polycarbonate sheet from Bunnings. Didn't produce a result anywhere near Gramp's professional job, just fixed it to the rear window with metres of tape. Worked well for three long trips, including Birdsville Track, Oodnadatta Track, and similar others, but then flew off on a sealed road on Yorke Peninsula.

If it had hit a pedestrian? doesn't bear thinking about! Spoke to NRMA - their advice was that anything other than a commercial product could affect insurance adversely. We can't get a commercial product for our canopy so will stick to cardboard in the future.

Cheers

I did something similar with the Bunnings perspex and then went to clark rubber to get some 2-3mm neoprene strip to hold it off the glass then the tape, use the good stuff as the stuff from supercrap is rubbish....

Oh for the skills of the Moggs of this world!

I've cleaned the glasses today just for 2009, but I think they'll mist up very time I look at the super fund. Yeah, I know, I don't have to look

All the best for the New Year

The only problems I had with mine on my 93RRC, is that in really hot weather (say 40c at Kakadu) the glue on the velcro goes soft and the perspex sheet slid down the glass until it rested on the ledge at the bottom of the glass.

No biggies but if you car does not have a ledge at the bottom of the rear window the perspex could slide down.

I did one based on the Moggs design. Easy peasy - cost about $100 from memory and used the 3M Twin Lock Stuff which has lasted very well except for two little pieces that fell off, but there are many small bits to ensure safety.

It was a fun little project and way cheaper than some of the other projects.... ;-0

Cheers,

Mark
