Article Overview - Grampians
Located 260 kms west of Melbourne, the Grampians have a lot to offer the traveller. Spectacular rock formations, mountains and scenery make it a popular getaway. For the 4wder, there are numerous 4wd tracks to explore. View Full Article...
Can anyone recommend a good campround in the Grampians (preferably the National Park) suitable for a camper trailer? We are looking at camping there for about a week just after Easter.
Also what would people recommend doing/seeing while there?

Thanks

Grampian's Camp Grounds

Book early for Easter. Go to RACV and get tourist brochures, maps etc or local travel agent. Easy - peasy !

Tried google, but no info on which campgrounds would suit a camper trailer, and which are only suitable for tents. Hence the question to this forum.

Try some of the bush camping areas - rangers at the visitor centre will show you where they are. As for things to do, plenty of tracks to explore both by vehicle and on foot. Very scenic area.

Depends if you want a caravan park or bush camping - south west of Grampians - Mooralla - very bush - pit toilet- take everything else - north of Cavendish - last Easter there were just two couples there - and all we did was dig holes looking for smoky quartz crystals - great place though.

Thanks for the info. I prefer bush camping to caravan parks, as long as their is a loo. Will look up Mooralla. More into bushwalking, than fossicking.

Graham, our visit to the Grampians was in 2006 after a major fire, and only part of the park was open. We stayed at the Stapylton campground (sort of on the north west corner of the park). It had a very clean eco toilet. A nice spot. It was quite expensive compared to what we have been used to paying for park camps, and you have to pay at the visitor centre. The visitor centre will give you a map of all the drives and walks. Lovely park.

Hi

There are quite a few spot to camp with a trailer but have variable features.

The best one (IMHO) is Boraneang which is in the central part on a gravel road (Glenelg River Road). Because it is off the bitumen, not quite as busy as others but at Easter, everwhere in the Gramps is very busy. We only live 50 km away and don't go there at easter because of the crowds. Boreang has good long drop loo's and pit fire and has not yet suffered from pine post disease.

Buandick is off the Henty Highway on the western side and has a reasonable camping area but pine posts make it hard for a camper trailer. Good walks from the camping area, best one is not singed posted but I can email directions if interested. Again will be very busy over easter as only 10 km off bitumen.

There is another camp ground about 15 km south of Halls Gap right on the road, will be packed.

In the north, Roses Gap OK, Mt Stapleton dry and hot and not much shade.

Some other caming grounds still closed after the fires so don,t assume all those on maps will be open.

You need to get there early, thursday lunchtime to get a reasonable spot and many will roll up all night and camp in the dark. Also, there will be no water at all of these sites so take your own

Theres plenty to do. The best drive is over Goat Track and down Victoria Range track.

hope this helps

Will be arriving on the Easter monday so should avoid the Easter campers, but will catch the school holiday crowd. Are the crowds likely to have died down a bit once the public holidays are over?
Boreang sounds good.
