<span class="highlight">Lokka</span> Diff Locks

Janet - Have not given my set a full on workout yet but a couple of points. I suggest you get them fitted by a mechanic as they are not as easy to fit as it is stated. The steering is a little different, but it is easy to get used to. Can not comment on their longevity as I have not done a lot of long trips with them yet, but they are worth their weight in gold when you 4x4. I also upgraded to free wheeling hubs, but you may have these already. All in All been great so far. Will try them out in the middle of OZ agin mid this year. PS Cost will be around $1000 fitted for your Lokkas. Cheers Tony

I had them in the rear of my 80 years ago , worked really well. Did break a pin in it once , caused the diff to stay locked , but changed the pin when I got home and all good again.

as stated above, forget the do it yourself bit . Also forget about giving it to a normal mechanic . Must be a diff guy , so he can have the right shims ect.

Also , make sure you are there for the diff guy to use your instructions , he will tell you he dosnt need them , but he will stuff it up , I promise you .

please insist that he does it there way instead of his.

Jus ordered one for my front diff last week from 4WD Systems, they have gone up in price $70 for the GU ones ,this is not reflected in any of their advertising !

Going to have a crack at putting it in myself, if it requires shimming and I have to take it somewhere at least I wont be paying for too much labour.

Was in 4WD Action a while back , maybe a video on their site ?

I have had the same tyoe but a different brand) for ten years across a GQ and now GU and theyre great, not a zot of trouble

I had one put in my Hilux front diff. Had manual hubs fitted as well.
Makes a huge difference off road, especially with IFS. Only notice difference in steering when using 4wd on fast gravel tracks and sand. Tends to want to pull back to straight forward. I've done about 60,000 since fitted and plenty of 4wding, sand, high country, etc. I had mine fitted. Total cost of purchase and fitting $900. No trouble at all. Good luck!

I would not reccomend that you fit unlockers to your Patrol.

While a couple of posts above have alluded to the issue of them pulling your steering you will not appreicate the severity of it on that car or the danger it might present to you unless you have strong arm muscles.

The problem is small when not in 4wd , but when you go to 4wd and turn a corner under acceleration the acceleration locks the system in place and it will not unlock easily until you back off.
I.E. You plough straight ahead.

I thought I was pretty experienced with this stuff but came within a hairs breath of having my first ever real accident because of the massive understeer that can occur under certain circumstances.

Part of the problem is the degree of wheel rotation required by this brand.
Detroit lockers are a similar system but significantly less servere but the cost much more.

Your better choice is standard lockers.

Before we got rid of ours for ARB lockers we would find that we would have to drive a lot more in 2wd before using 4wd because
of the danger.

In certain conditions like powering up rocky ledges those lockers can work really well , but conditions in Victoria where there can be slick surfaces and ice don't allow enough traction for them to operate properly and can understeer you straight over an edge.

I see it and resuced unwitting users.

It can be difficult to decide these things espically from internet posts when you do not really know those behind them or there experience with various systems.

Low price often dictates ones choice as well, so at least if you go down that path advise your insurance company and put in place a back out plan whereby they can be returned in your are not happy.
