I know there is plenty of info in previous threads about this but I'm still having trouble.

There doesn't appear to be enough memory on the nuvi itself to load Shonkymaps so I have loaded the maps to an SD card, like most others have. Trouble is I can't find the maps on my nivi once I insert the card.

Here's what I've done so far...
I have loaded the version 3.51 to the SD card
Inserted the SD card into nuvi
used the path TOOLS/SETTINGS/MAP/MAP INFO....
and then in my available list of maps installed, all I have is the City Navigator 2009. NO OTHER OPTIONS!!!!!!

I even downloaded it again onto another SD card in case the first one was stuffed, no difference.

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers

You need Garmin Mapsource to load it onto your Nuvi.

To get Garmin Mapsource follow these directions:

OK...without going into too many details of why etc. if you dont have Garmins 'Trip and Waypoint Manager' installed, then probably the easiest way to get Mapsource installed (all free and legal!) is to download and install the Garmin Training Centre for windows from: Site Link

Once you have done that you can then install Mapsource. I suggest using version 6.13.7, as the latest one 6.14.1 is s l o w.
6.13.7 can be downloaded from:Site Link
There are other ways of going about it...but that way is relatively straight forward

Those links didn't work so try this

Once you install the training centre then download Mapsource53, the first one on the list

Well I'm doing something wrong....not understanding half the lingo is probably half my problem.

I have downloaded to my PC the mapsource stuff and looked at the garmin tutorial (about a 2 - 3 minute video thingy)

Anyway, all that seems to have loaded fine and my untitled mapsourse program gives me a window onscreen with a world map that I can zoom in and out of and all that, so I figure that bit is correct..correct???

Now that I have all the Garmin training centre stuff downloaded, I have the 'training centre' and the 'mapsource program' which both show pretty much the same map program on screen when open.

Now... it only seems to be in the training program where I am able to 'Add a New Device' being my 760, but the drop down isn't working and the 'Find a Device' box doesn't locate my 760. YES IT IS PLUGGED IN VIA A USB....

So what am I doing wrong...???? or have I done something wrong already and don't know it???

This stuff is confusing me big time. HELP>>>>>>AAAhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

Is your computer recognising the Nuvi as a "removable Disc"

It should show two "removable Disc" drives in windows explorer. One for the Nuvi memory and one for your add on card.

This is a great site and plenty of real "gurus" there. You'll have to register to post etc, but it's free.

Hi Andrew
This may help, it was from a gps forum:

How to get Mapsource free.

First download the “Training Centre For Windows” Software from:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-04

Run the installer. This installs a base map in the mapsource directory.
Make sure Training Centre then runs ok.
Now that the directory is there, get your Mapsource update from:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209

Then read the Mapsource manual on how to use it.
Alternatively you can go to the Garmin site to download the tutorial:

http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapsourceTutorial.html

Also have a look at thread :54311

Regards
Neil

Andrew
If you want to gain more room on the Nuvi Memory you will find instructions as to how HERE follow those instructions exactly and do the back up first as explained , just 4 links down from the pic of the Nuvi.
I'm not sure how much room you would need for shonky but would be better on the SD card anyhow.

Hello

The installation of shonkymaps (full topo) requires about 192 mb of memory.

Shonky is described as non-routing. I'm not sure what that means ... you can't define a route on the laptop and download it? or you can but need OziExplorer? or it's not moving map?

Hi Sigmund
Non Routing means, that you "can't" input an address or location and have the unit direct you to that place.

Hi Sigmund
Glad all worked out ok.
Yes, the mapset is pretty good for nothing.
You can get another free mapset "Track 4 Australia" from:
T4A Maps
There is also a better Pro version, available for a few dollars.

Thanks Neil. Will check it out.

Any views on which is better? And how recent the Shonkymap data is? I see copyright dated at 2007 on the site but that may not mean much.
