viscous fan problems

Submitted: Friday, Jan 18, 2002 at 00:00

Chris

During our trip round Aust last year, our 80 series 1hz diesel cruiser began to overheat
(only when "working" in high outside temp and aircon going. We think the clutch fan isn't kicking in, and we were told that you can actually add more viscous oil, which we tried recently. I found that an aftermarket fan is about $150.oo, so perhaps it's just worth changing. What do you think?

Chris,
A friend of mine recently had the same problem, unfortunatelly the only way out is the genuine part.
He tried the oil, the aftermarket fan and did not work until he bought the genuine part which worked OK.

Had same problem 12 months ago, spoiled a good holiday, as the Toyota Dealer (Victoria) did not seem to pick up the fact that the fan was not working properly.... Got a replacement and no worries since !! I wouldn't chance any cheap version !

having experienced fan hub failures on 75 series landcruisers, they seem to be a common failure after around 100,000 km`s. Dont buy the aftermarket hubs either thay dont last 5 minutes and dont work as good as the genuine toyota part.

I had the same trouble and had radiator service done. Problem was the Viscous fan was stuffed. I changed it with a non-genuine part from Repco and can highly recommend it. Have done some hard beach sections with no problems.
