Hi Lotzi.
We were lucky to see Lake Eyre filled the last time.It was certainly a great site.Friends of ours took a plane trip from William Creek & if you get the opportunity, do so.
Cheers.

G'day Vince
Lucky bugger, it really is one of those things where you get one, maybe two chances to see.
Thanks
Lotzi

If you happened to be spending the year touring with the wife and kids and had nowhere in particular to be for the next few months, where would be the best place to head for to see this 'once in a lifetime' event?

Joff,
There is NOWHERE that is public access to see the water in Lake Eyre. There is simply note enough water entering the Lake, despite all the hype.

Water is only flowing into the lake down the Warburton. The only way of seeing it is to fly over the top end of it - a plane trip from William Creek is the usual way to see it. See WrightsAir website. I don't know if there are any flights from Birdsville or Marree.

Lotsi's link unfortunately had a bunch of inaccuracies. For instance, Lake Hope is on the Cooper, is bone dry and is expected to remain so at this stage.

Hello again Phil - a couple of inaccuracies alright. How would a Barcoo grunter and a Cooper creek wedge-tailed catfish get to Lake Eyre when the Cooper water will not reach there.
Please also note - Lake Eyre is not 'in flood' - it does have some water flowing into it at present through the very top.
Phil, we have just come back from Lake Macattie (between Birdsville and Bedourie) - I cannot believe the volume of water - standing on the edge and looking west I could only see water - if Christopher Columbus was sailing west today he would susrely wonder about 'falling off the edge of the known world'. I have never seen so much water. We drove for 25 miles south along the eastern edge - there are many more miles to the north and who knows how many miles to the west. UNBELIEVEABLE.
This water has to drain away via Eyre Creek - it will be months and months and months. (Water around Bedourie is rising again now from the rains again up north- and will come into this Lake).
We were up there just after sun up because leaving it until later in the day you cannot distinguish between coffee coloured water and sand dunes and flats - simply glorious. Found a marvellous camp site which is a bonus - you'd love it Phil!
As for Birdsville - our fourth flood (in the Diamantina) is rising now around Durrie Station and will be here in a few days. Yes there will be planes flying out of Birdsville - small problem at the moment is that we have not had any fuel deliveries since early December and have only emergency Jet-A and Av-gas at the moment. Once this fourth flood goes down the supply trucks should be able to get through - Windorah, Jundah & Stonehenge are still shut off to us.
We haven't had any rain - so hopefully the floodwater will be able to come and go reasonably quickly. (We've run out of coffee beans!) Haven't sorted today's photos yet but hoping for some good ones.
Birdsville photographers have been granted use of the new Art Gallery for an Exhibition running most of this tourist season - based on Birdsville In Flood! Great excitement - looking forward to sharing our photos with everyone.

Hi Ruth,
Geeze, you're whetting my appetite! We skipped Lake Machattie last year.

Art Gallery sounds very good. We had one of Wolfgang's French Line prints in our dining room until last week. But Kathryn decided something more abstract would look better, so its disappeared down the hallway. Look forward to seeing more of your photos. Thanks for keeping us so well informed.

Cheers
phil
