What do you munch in the car

Submitted: Tuesday, Sep 02, 2003 at 15:31

We all munch stuff in the car - right? I want to know what you munch (within reason) to broaden my horizons and menu..... We tend to get stuck into Allens lollies (only Allens will do - strawb & cream, pineapples, snakes etc), mixed nuts, Lions Christmas cake (in season), those little packets of chips for the kids etc. I don't know why I'm writing this, since I'm on a love handle reduction program, but what the heck...Russell S

On any 'love handle' reduction trip, your thoughts immediatley turn to those things that place the handles there in the first place. Thats why you're writing this.

I eat anything and everything on a trip but I should take a leaf out of Al and Mrs Als book and try the sandwhiches and fruit etc.

Unfortunatley I don't have love handles , I have love levers.

K-Time Twists are popular with the kids. So (unfortunatley) are sultanas. Fruit is easy to consume - apples easiest, mandarins good as the citrus smell takes over the car. Biscuits with dips etc good also for the kids. Sometimes we have lollies, but more often than not I find a half full packet at the bottom of the centre console when cleaning out the vehicle after travelling.

Lots of water is consumed also.Just Do It!

no.... but I have thought that we need to change what we have in the car - you get in a bit of a habit, taking the same things, and not always healthy..... Over a three or four week trip you can consume a lot of cake, lollies, and you're sitting on your butt for hours on end. The old fat cells start to bulge.......Russell S

Interesting query, this one.

We carry "Mentos" chewy sweets - the kids called them "driving lollies" in their younger days. Also like to carry a couple of bananas.

If I am travelling a long distance in a day, I "charge up" with a Maccas and Coke or coffee about every 5 to 6 hours. Gives me a caffeine and sugar hit in one.

So I have "drived, survived" taken a short break and can get back on the road with minimum delay. (Yep, I know "drived" it does not fit, grammatically, but allow me a little writer's license).

Once in camp food is a bit more serious, especially if "she who must .. " is in camp. All fresh, all good, possibly as penance for the Maccas getting there. Plenty of fruit, water etc etc .....

(Sigh) ... sure do like those Maccas though.

On long trips I try and organise a container of 'scroggin' (I don't know where the name comes from !) It is a mix of dried fruit, nuts, smarties etc etc. - whatever you like
You can make your own or buy it from local Delli or supermarket - its cheap and healthy ?

One lolly game we like to play is with Clinkers.
Each person gets one Clinker at a time and you count the number of red ones you end up with. The one with the most is the winner. Amuses not just the kids.

When I was a kid on hols with the folks, mum handed out lifesavers. Our game was to see who could suck the lifesaver without breaking it for the longest time. Kept my brother and I amused and with hindsight, quiet too so mum & dad musta been happy too. I'll be sure to try this out with our son when he's a bit older.
