Article Overview - The Tanami Track
The Tanami Track is essentially a great short-cut linking the Red Centre to the Kimberley. Although once a notorious 4WD track, it is now a graded dirt highway. View Full Article...
Drove from Alice to Halls Creek yesterday and today.

Alice to Rabbit flat generally good and 100Kmh comfortable.
Except about 10Km from rabbit Flat the road is cut up from rain and deep tyre tracks.
From Rabbit Flat on it deteriorates with some 100Kmh sections but deteriorating to the WA border. Worse from Coyote mine.

From WA border on the road is much worse with extensive corrugations and some areas where a side track is better than the road.
The worst section is the last 60-70Km into Halls Creek where the road runs throgh a range with bad corrugations and big rocks and rock bars on the road where 50Kmh is uncomfortable. this is particularly so after the Kidman Station.

Hello Phillip, I will be going that way in August when I head to Wyndham from Brisbane for the races, what do you call the "Kidman Station"?, the only stations I remember on the road between Billiluna and Halls Creek were Caranya and Ruby Plains. I carted fuel and stores for Mick Quilty at Ruby Plains in the early 70's with my Father. Went past there in 84 after doing the top half of the Canning but didn't stop.

Gee Philip, last year the best part was from Halls Creek to Wolfe Creek Crater where they were doing road re-alignments, so the new road must have cut up quick.

Rob, the stations most of the way and around Wolfe Creek Crater are owned by a Kidman company.

Hi Motherhen, thanks for that. I know Mick and Cherie Quilty sold Ruby Plains late 70's or early 80's but I did'nt know who to, and I see on maps now that Caranya is abandoned.

Ruby Plains on the Tanami and Sturt Creek Station to the east of Ruby Plains were Kidman stations in the late 90's and probably still are.

Although the homestead is abandoned, it is run as part of the station group (something like S Kidman & Co)
