love the new (what I'm calling the "start-up" appearance) Look
Part of which is:

"Have Your Say:
In what sort order do you prefer to view Forum Threads?
Sort by Thread ID . . (67%)
Sort by Response Time . . (24%)
No idea. I did not know I could change sort order . . (9%)"

What I can't really understand is why would you vote for the "thread ID" where you get to read the same thread each time you open EVEN WHEN it has NO NEW posts to read :-((

I would rather read NEW POSTS when they are ADDED to existing threads with-out reading the same post with-out any added replies each time
but it's obvious by the vote, most guys (and girls) want to read posts even with-out any NEW replies...
As they say - each to their own

I too like the new look - but i keep having to log in again, even when just refreshing the page.

I like the idea of keeping the choice of how to sort, and use the most recent post, not the most recently added to method.

ExplorOz - David & Michelle replied:

Maybe this info will help clarify. If you only view posts by Response time, then you miss the start of new threads as they won't be listed in this view until they have received a reply. If using Thread Id sort however, you get to see all NEW threads as they are listed in thread order. The default is set to thread id sort so that all you have to do is check the top of the list for new threads, and use the watch list to keep an eye/receive alerts on all replies/followups coming into threads you've already started to read and are interested in following. It is horses for courses. I often switch views depending on what I'm looking for at the time. We are just interested in seeing what most people prefer as we were looking at whether the default was correctly set to the right option - looks like it is by the results of the poll.

Michelle,

I use the Response time, and usually have no issues with new threads. I also have the number of threads per page set at 100 so it is usually more than 24 hours before new threads get to the second page. I guess it depends on how often you frequent the Forum. for this to be an advantage. I used to use the Thread Id sort but it was a PITA to keep track of threads you had responded to when they progressed to another page. I have turned the alert email option off as my email account gets filled up with notifications of responses LOL

Using the Watched thread feature for threads of interest works but you are unable to watch archived thread unless you have them in your watched thread list prior to them becomming Archived. I have found some great threads in regards to info I need that are archived but I am unable to add them to my watched list as they are archived. I therefore have to manually record the thread number so I can refer back to it at a later stage :(

Narna, I meant an archived watched thread wont change, so there will be nothing for the watching person (someone actually checks the watched threads for everyone and lets them know, rumours of it being automated are grossly inaccurate) to do cause the archived thread doesn't change.

Since you asked so nicely,

Wally is on a totally different topic to what I am in regards to the watched threads.

I use the Watched Thread feature to save a thread that has the info that I need for future use.
I still have the Thread that Footy started for the HF unit he gave away (I recieved the unit), it has all the relevant info contained in it that I still refer to. To try and find that thread again using the search function is not as easy as it seems so it will remain in my Watched Threads until I deem the info no longer needed.
When I have used the search function and found a very relevant thread that is archived (sometimes by only a day or so, I am unable to use the Watched Thread function as the thread is archived. I then have to record the thread ID number so as not to have to try the search function again.

I hope that explains it for you LOL

Sir Kev,
I always ask nicely, even my dumb an stupid questions I still ask nicely.

Why not just copy/paste the relevant important information to a new folder on your hard-drive that way you have it for prosperity or till you reformat an don't save your contents ?
That way you have the control of the information

Ahhhh I see Narna. You mean you use it like a bookmark, to mark old threads that you want to refer to at a later stage. I di that too. I keep a list of the thread numbers and refer back with the search facility.

I like your way, but I have about 40 that I refer back to, it would make my list quite long.

We live and learn

Michelle,

Are you sure? I am pretty certain that new threads will appear at the top of the 'sort by response time' list even before they have their first response.

In fact as I write this Post ID: 70104 has just appeared at the top of the list with no response yet.

Matt,

I do not think she is sure as you are right. The sort order for Response Time sort is based on the Latest date/time and a new thread has the latest set to the time it was loaded hence you will not miss anything in this view (it used to work the way Michelle mentioned but this was a few years ago - ah how time flies).

As David has said, you get to read the latest posts (and also Threads) when you use the "Responce Time" loading system.
