Mick,
I have just been watching some of your excellent videos of your desert travels.
My question is regarding the stability of the camera, particullarly when you are mobile, is the camera hand held?, or do you have some device (post) in the vehicle which the camera attaches to?.
Most of the videos are really stable which makes for better viewing.

Barry,
I'm not sure what
Mick uses but I just bought one of these out of the current Camera House catalogue:
Image Could Not Be Found
If you jump onto YouTube and enter "Fat Gecko" you'll see a whole bunch of videos using it and see it in use (if that makes sense).
I'm going to stick it on the solar panels of our van and film the view over the tow vehicle on the tow vehicle's windscreen looking back.
I also bought one of these:
Image Could Not Be Found
A Launch Helmet Cam from
http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/ in Victoria Park. They are the Aussie outlet and are here in
Perth.
Look at the videos on their website. Great fun.
Only limited by your imagination.

I know! I know! I can't help myself.
A friend of mine just bought one of these:
Image Could Not Be Found
Just released in the US. Full 1080HD video. Records onto an SD card.
Bought it thru Amazon. $244 (Aus dollars) landed in
Perth.
Check the specs on the net. It's just the duck's guts.

And you know, we wouldn't have ANY of this technology if that Flying Saucer hadn't crashed in Roswell in 1948 and had all its secrets pilfered.
Now where's my tinfoil helmet.....

Thanks for that Gone Bush, the one from the camera House catalogue looks good, what sort of dollars are we talking about here?. It looks like it will do the job nicely.

It was just short of $200 but there were at least 2 Camera Houses in
Perth that had them out for $50 or so less than that but I didn't want to drive up there and postage would have made it the same as retail down here.
Go to the Camera House website and look at individual shops and search within there. I think the cheapest was in Leederville.
cheers

Wish we had the camera mount before we did our trip. Would have saved me hanging off the side step lol. Will have to get one of them.

G'day Barry,
I bought the camera just before I went on this years trip. I'm using a Sony HDR-XR200. It was on Special at the time but was still a lot more than I intended to pay. The reason I got it was the stabilising feature and the GPS recording as
well (it pegs your position at the time of video to a GPS position that can be logged on Google earth etc. It also had a 4 megapixel still camera which is great.
The other key feature was that it was one of the few cameras available that has software that allows you to convert a HD file into Standard Def or MPeg while retaining the original. The video snippets you've been watching are in Mpeg and are very low resolution. They are still good quality though.
The stability feature is fantastic. The two snippets in the Canning post I did a few weeks ago are proof of the pudding. I use a ram mount for the camera fastened to the jesus handle on the "A" pillar normally (
Here's a photo ). The first video is with the camera so mounted. It was that rough that the camera actually shut down but prior to that, the video is still quite watchable. I hand held the camera the second time round to prevent it shutting off.
Canning Corrugations video
Heres the link to that post. Members
John and Suzette have since bought the same camera on the strength of the performance of mine so it will be interesting to hear their reports on their return from the
Kimberley this month. Great Camera, great results and easy to use. Hope that helps.
Cheers
Mick

It's a good camera all right Alan. It's just sitting on a base plate bolted to the A Pillar. Nothing fancy at all.
GB. All the essentials my friend. At least it tells me when my tyres are flat, when the engines buggered, the turbo's too hot, The radiator's out of water, the musics to loud and most importantly...when I'm lost! Ha Ha.
Cheers
