Hi, did you need to use 4wd on the track i.e. is it sandy or difficult washouts? I want to take the captiva through in December - I have ozi ce for navigating. I can basically go anywhere that doesn't require deep sand, low range or where there is risk of underbody contact eg deep ruts! Any photos?

Nice track the way it is - not too rough, not too smooth - juuust right!

The Captiva may struggle in a few places as there are few dunes with turns and scallops that require 4WD and clearance. I don't recall having any photos of these though.

I don't know but I reckon you would be OK to do the sthn part of the Bore Tk in a Captiva. There may be a few spots where you would need care and attention to track to pick the right line but really it is a pretty good run in 2wd for the most part. We were told of great washouts and wet track conditions on the nthn part of the track and with big vans in tow we opted for the safety of the Strezlecki for the final run into Innaminka. Adrian has posted some good and indicative shots of what to expect for the most part but as said a few up and overs and in and out sand dune country is also there but no photos but nothing that should worry an awd. SOme of the claypan country did have wheel rut marks to watch out for but plenty of options to avoid these were on offer when I we went through. All in all a bloody beautiful track if you ask me. Remember it is isolated so if you can. Just reading.....December?? man that is going to be HOT!!! so maybe the sand dune country will be a hell of a lot softer??? and definately a lot less traffic than the two other vehicles we saw on the track.

Alloy, The ferry price was as when I crossed it back in 1994 lol!!! and even then I should have been charged $90 cause I had a trailer but the lady taking my money couldn't work out my change from $100 so just give me the usual $20 change and told me have fun hehehe.

Adrian, we still often go back through these photos and talk about this most wonderful trip we shared with you guys. It looks like we will all (Bob, Bob+Lorraine, Bruce+Anne, you and myself) will all be back to share stories at St George this year??? I hope it works out that way anyway.

Re time of year unfortunately the boss doesn't give much choice on holidays and the coastal trips are just to full of loopies (holiday makers in kiwi jargon) I heard its hot inland I just want to see for myself - anyway I booked an airconned cabin at Innaminka just in case its really cooking! Also planning to go to Birdsville via walkers for a beer - looking at "The outback travellers guides" it doesn't seem so bad through walkers, unfortunately the guides don't cover the bore track. Anyway see how it goes and if I fall in love with the place come back and do it in something with "real" 4WD!

Please make sure you have real A/T tyres as a minimum (preferebly in good nic) and know when to lower pressures and have some way of re-inflating them. You will be one of very few people out there that time of year so be prepared to look after yourself should the worst occur. Expect heaps of tyre shreading stones for mile after mile. The Strez is much higher traffic volumes especially trucks and has the corrogations to prove it. Your choice as to what track you take but I suspect the Bore would actually be kinder on vehicle but definately less chance of someone out here to help you compared to Strez.
