Truma Climaster noise

Hi all,

We're newcomers to caravanning and have recently completed a shakedown trip in our newly acquired Supreme Outback van. Other than a few niggling little problems that one would expect in an 8 year old pre-loved unit, we have no real complaints except one.

The air con unit makes enough noise to wake the dead.

While I expected some noise, this has, especially outside, a very loud fan noise that made us embarrassed to run it in caravan parks. It would certainly cheese me off if I was parked next to it on a hot night. The noise inside is less obnoxious, being more vibration than fan noise, but SWMBO has the unit under her bed and is not a particularly happy little Vegemite.

I've made sure the filters are clean but suspect this is not the problem as the airflow seems to be OK. The cooling isn't brilliant, but it makes enough difference to be worthwhile if it would do it without sounding like a Fokker Friendship 20 feet away.

OK, here are the questions for the team-

Are these units naturally very loud?
Is there something that dies in the fan unit? (Although it doesn't sound mechanical in origin)
Has anyone come across this or a similar problem, and even better, come up with a solution?

Buying earplugs for all the good folk in a caravan park doesn't seem to be a good option!

Thanks for your reply. I don't know if Supreme actually had anything to do with the installation as we have no idea if the van was delivered with the air con installed from new.

However, they may be able to dig something up from their records.

Would be checking the installation first according to the installation manual. May find ducting and insulation has not been correctly fitted. Truma is well made quality gear and doubt it should be that noisey. Handbook may even give you dB rating for noise as German gear has to comply to DIN standards for everything.

Thanks for your reply. Paperwork is a bit thin on the ground - the installation manual seems to have been frightened away by the noise and the user manual is minimalist. :-)

I suspect that whatever it's sitting on (foam or something?) may have disintegrated over the last (x) years since it was installed and this may well be causing the internal noise carried through the structure of the van. However I don't think that's the problem with the fan noise. As you said, I feel this is not how it should operate.

I suppose a secondary question is - is this a caravan problem or an air con problem and who would be the best type of person to look at it?

We're in Logan. Can anyone recommend a good caravan/air con repair outfit between the Brisbane River and the Gold Coast?
