80 series engine options

Cruzin&Campin

Time to start thinking about the engine in my 80 series. Currently have standard 1FZ running dual fuel. Has 300k on the clock. Gets about 390kms for 90 litres of gas. Wanting to hear from people about what options I have, and what they get from their current drives. Love the 80 series and won't change it. Does tow a camper regularly.

I've heard of a few people fitting injected 5 litre holden motors to these. Easy to come across, kits available and parts are dirt cheap.

What do you want? this is what the mechanic would ask:

1. Do you like petrol / dual fuel or is this an opportunity for you to get into a diesel?
2. Is economy or power more important?
3. Rebuild exisiting engine?

6. You can go diesel and gas these days

Heaps of knowledge from people much smarter than me in the chat group but will probably need to give them a bit more info to get the answers you need.

Will probably do the same with mine one day. Body still good, added stuff to my liking over the years but engines don't last forever.

If I have more power don't need to drive as hard all the time. $ 4 $ dual fuel is cheaper to run than Diesel, but hard to what a turbo diesel fly past me on a hill towing a horse float. good 'cheap' start would be extractors and larger exhaust.

Not sure if anyone here in the group has a 3" exhaust on their petrols to give any advice on how noisy it is but a 2.5" mandrel exhaust with extractors would make a huge difference in power and would give better economy back also :)

Went down that path. Make sure you speak to the right people. Took 12 months, and about $1,800 to get a drivable car. Increase kms from 360 to 390 per tank. A bit louder and a hell of a lot quieter than the first time I got it back from an expert the first time.

I know you don't have diesel, but for what it's worth, I fiitted an after market turbo to my plain jane 1HZ 1993 series 80 at 200,000 kms.

It was liike a having a new car; over 50% more grunt, and I can drive Mackay to Brisbane without refuelling (2 tanks - 900kms on about 130litres).

4 years later, still rock solid at 300,000kms. I tow a 1 tonne camper.

Guess what I would do .. :)

Thought it would have settled down by now about 15000km Had the 3' exhaust, injectors, fuel pump and dyno done. Ive put it down to the extra stuff hanging off it. Roofrack steel bullbar & rear bar two tyres and all that stuff in the rear draws. It all adds up.

Extra weight might be significant if you did a lot of stopping & starting or bush bashing or sand driving. Once up to speed on the road, you only have resistance from gear trains, wind & tyres.
My Series 80 (Turbo Diesel, did I say !), has heaps of stuff on it, at least as much as yours (see my rig on Exploroz), I just found a roofrack mounted Wind Break in a Trucky Accessory store. I need it as my TJM rack carries square fronted storage boxes with solar panels on top, small awning, lights .. .
My camper causes a lot of wind drag, so I'm, working to cut that back too.
The loaded rig is over 4 tonnes.
The figures i gave you for fuel don't include dragging the camper.

I should have mentioned that I'm getting on, and don't push it.
I don't think I'm one who 'drives like a granny', but I feel for the engineering and drive accordingly.
OK, I'm a granny (grandpa actually).

When my Jackaroo reached 300,000km I started looking at the options thinking that I was going to have to do something soon. I was primarily looking at rebuilds because good 2nd hand engines aren't readily available for that car. At least one rebuilder suggested that the engine may not be worn out and noted that just about all his work now comes from only catastrophic failures (eg. engines that are boiled dry) because modern engines just don't wear out like they used to in the good ol' days. With the rates around $4,500-5,000+ for a rebuild of my engine I decided to wait until it really needed attention...

I ended up getting almost another 100,000km out of that engine before I even had to top up the oil between changes (at 10,000km intervals)! Your engine could/should still have a bit of life in it (at least, if Landcruisers are as good as Jackaroos! LOL).

300K isnt much for that engine if treated properly.

If the valve clearances are done reguarly and you use good oil you should be right up to 500.

Mine is on LPG and just over 300k now. I know that one day I'll have to reco the head and at that time I'll put in the LPG valve seats. I have run Penrite oil in mine since new andwhen the rocker cover is off it';s still ilike new inside.

Just make sure you use Flashlube and you will be fine.

Economy wise I get about 440k out of a tank of LPG 96lt. Petrol, just under 600k.

If anything I'd be looking at the Lexus V8 Petrol for a conversion. Lightweight motors with heaps of potential, but reasonable economy if driven sedately.
