Hi warren,
I'm far from knowing anything about Nissans, but 15lt/100k's is a bit rich.
I've always kept an eye on fuel consumption to give me an idea of how the vehicle is traveling.
My 80 series 91 1HDT gets on average about 10 K/L, if I'm towing either the horse float with horses or our Jayco Swan this may drop down to about 7.5k/l or as low as 5k/l depending on how heavy my right foot gets.
I'm sure others will be more helpful, and now how to contact Nissan and what to do.
I hope you can get the problem sorted.

Hello Warren,
I to have a D40 and get excellent fuel ecomomy from it, 10L/100Klms, 12L/100klms towing camper trailer and grossing 3.7 tonne.

Have you tried resetting the fuel system?

If you want to fine out more info go to
http://www.nissan-navara.net/index.php

To carry out the reset carry out the following

Turn ingnition on so all dash lights come on.

Wait 3 seconds

PUMP accelerator pedel 5 times within 5 seconds....

with foot now OFF accelerator wait 7 seconds...

After 7 seconds press and hold down accelerator pedel for 10 seconds...

Atfer 10 seconds the Engine Managment Light will start to flash, at this point remove foot from accelerator.

the Navara is now in diag mode, so let the EML flash for a bit. then press and hold the acclerator pedel down for more than 10 seconds..this will then reset ECU and fuel pump etc......and put them into learning mode.

NOTE: When the EML light is flashing, this is listing possible fault codes... so if you know how to read the fault codes or know the sequences then you can figure out any possible faults with your Navara with out getting the dealer to do it!!

Hope this helps

Warren,

I had a 3lt Patrol in the convey a few months ago and it would go into limp mode. Hard to start and no power. This was not good as we were going out to Eyre Creek (Simpson Desert)

It was the EGT sensor that was playing up. The vehicle would be fine than just lose power. Once he had it replaced the EGT sensor vehicle was running better.

Hi Warren,

As far as I know, the 3.0L Patrol (or any other common 4WD diesel) does NOT have an EGT sensor fitted as standard. This is based on my reading of the ZD30 Patrol workshop manual's Engine Management System (EMS) chapter. (This version is a few years old, the latest Common Rail version of the engine may be different- but I doubt it.)

If the ZD30 HAD an EGT sensor incorporated into its EMS as standard, I suspect a hell of a lot less of them would have expired due to overfueling and melted piston crowns.

Are you sure it wasn't the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system that was faulty? I can easily imagine a stuck-open EGR valve causing very ordinary performance.

Instead of asking the EXPERTS here why not take it to your Nissan dealer and see if they can find a fault.

With out a scan tool you are only guessing and engine/electrical faults will no always log a fault code.

Where do you start..
A faulty sensor.
A faulty actuator.
Faulty wiring.
Faulty earth.
Faulty communications.
Faulty alternator.
Faulty variable vane in turbo.
Faulty drive by wire.
ABS feed back issue.
Faulty fuel pump.
Faulty pressure relief valve in fuel rail.
Transmission fault.

All of these issues have the ability to cause the vehicle to go into limp mode that I would say is what you are experiencing being able to only do 30Kph.

These faults can either be a soft or hard fault that may or may not record a fault and maybe resettable with turning the ignition on and off, disconnecting the battery, doing a manual or scan tool reset or may be time based.

You might have to ask then to read the raw data to see if something is not right.

Don't blame the dealer for not being able to fix it, we have found many problems that dealers and other repairs have overlooked.......and I know dealers and other repairers who have found faults that we have over looked or that has not be present when we tried to diagnose it.

whats with the attitude?
Warren said he had no faith in Nissan's service and i for one totally agree with him.
forums like this one are a wealth of information and real life experiences of people who have been there done that. I for one would sooner ask a question here b4 i take it to a Nissan workshop to be charged a fortune for service thats not up to scratch!!!

my rant over,cheers.

Sorry I forgot people here know more then people who have been trained in the art of current diagnostics.

I would comfortably say very few people on this forum would understand diagnostics and the modern CRD engine.

People who hate dealers are their worst enemy's.

Maybe I get sick of DIY's trying to do it them selves (because their mate said.....) causing damage that was once an easy fix to start with, then they telephone wanting advice and information that only make them more angry when you refuse to give it to them.

If I feel sick I see a doctor.

What I an getting at was new CRD engines can be a pain to diagnose and if you do the wrong thing it can cost you a lot of money, using a simple test light or multimeter can cost thousands.

How do you check output, inputs and wave forms if you don't understand it to start with.

Whats to say that they don't read these forums or others?
Their don't have to reply to anything here and let people know that they visit and read the threads. They maybe a member and not comment on such topics. Imagine for one moment that a Nissan employee identifies themselves and comments on a topic here how many would jump on them with all manner of questions, accusations and hound them about what poor customer service they give.
Do you really believe their would put their hand up?

Well It's good to see I'm the only one who offer some advice that may be right.

So the other people on here with some real knowledge who apparently occupies forums might like to come forward and make a recommendation of what could be wrong.

I agree with olcoolone in regards to the scan tool having used one myself when working in a workshop.

Warren you could have had your car diagnosed and repaired in a quicker time than it takes to read this thread, that is to say fixed once and properly.

By the way you don't need to go to a Nissan dealer to have this done, any well equipped workshop should have a scan tool.

I agree with oldcoolone also.

Without scan codes the question is meaningless and any answer would be worse than a guess.

I think it would be dangerous to try to give advise to anyone who has to ask the question in the first place. (Did that make sense?)

Ok, Lets put aside the argument about Company reps, employees reading forums for a moment because I can't prove they do and you can't prove that they don't ;)
Warren has posted above that "when i did take it to Nissan and saie to manager dont bull #### me whats going on he said to be honest some are doing that and we don't know why"
Surely Nissan have the right equipment to diagnosed their own products. Besides there is an admission from Nissan that they don't know why their product does what it does or doesn't do it.
Along with Warren, I would like to know what is causing his vehicle to behave in the way it does. And if Nissan can't find the reason, well that's just another reason I'm glad I don't own one. :)
Warren I really hope you can find a reason for your problem.
Just a thought, It's not a faulty temp sensor telling the Computer its getting too hot or too cold when it's not?
The reason I ask is, a bloke down the road, his Triton was doing the same as yours, and that was the culprit.
