Callawa Road

Submitted: Saturday, Oct 04, 2003 at 17:59

Coops (Pilbara)

Have just this afternoon returned from completing the Callawa Road trek.

To all those who I have promised an update - it will be coming soon. I've got some serious cleaning and maintenance to complete first and then I'll be in touch.

To any others who may have questions about this trek please post your question here and I shall respond accordingly. I shall also add an update to the trek notes on this site.

The toll was : 2 brand new Wrangler MTR's (ouch), 2 busted flares, 1 UHF antenna and mount, AM/FM antenna, Snorkel, busted fuel line and about 3 million deep and serious scratches, with a more thorough investigation pending. And that was just my wheels , there was 3 others in the party.Allyn

are you keen ?
I think I know where it is but I'll have to research a bit more.
Is it off Kidson track somewhere?

Checked out Coppin's Gap & Kitty's Gap on the way out of Warrawagine and Coppins is a good day trip out of Port Hedland with water all year round. You probably know that though !Allyn

a little bit of traffic but all traces would have disappeared after this wet season I think.
For my money there was no specific points of interest along the way that couldn't be gotten at via Shay Gap or Woodie Woodie Roads. Callawa Homestead and old Warrawagine shearing shed were interesting & Coppins Gap was a nice spot for a picnic lunch but they're all this side, or thereabouts, of the Oakover River.
I wouldn't recommend taking the west (right) side of Callawa Rd when the road splits as there was virtually nothing to see in that section except bush & trees scratching your car. It took us 7 hours to complete 54 Km's and we were smashing our way thru. Without software or GPS one could easily get lost I reckon too.
Am curious as to what's on the left side but curiosity killed the cat and this cat won't be traversing that track again.
It took us all 2 whole days to get the sap off our Toyota's as well but that's neither here nor there as you've always got to clean after a big trip.

I have been out that way three times now, have found and abandoned native plant farm along Callawa creek as well as water holes. A section of the number 1 rabbit proof fence that is still up and in good nic. And some natural archs in the hills north of the creek crossing. Rock deposits called Ge nodes or Thunder eggs.

I aggree the road is extremely overgrown and hard on the vehicles.
