Hi guys looking for any hints as to a nice caravan park to stay over easter for a few days in the Dubbo region.

I have heard of some trouble in the past just wondering if it is still a problem. I am do the lap and are looking at taking my 4 year old to the Dubbo zoo, and Wellington caves but not at the expense of broken car windows so any help thanks.

There's a nice one just over the bridge going south that has an 8 foot high barbed wire topped chain wire fence around it ;-)

Dubbo City Holiday park. We've stayed there in the past with no problems.

Molong might be a bit far out but I enjoyed a 5 week stay there in 2007.

I was advised, by a very knowledgeable Dubbo resident, to stay at the Big 4 Caravan Park near the Zoo. The CPs in town are fine.
Apparently, there are some unpleasant issues in town.

I'll second that, the Big4 is right next to the Zoo at Dubbo and is very neat and tidy. One of the cleanest CP's I have ever stayed at.

The Big 4 near the zoo is great. We stayed their back in September for 2 nights and we thought it was a very good park.

I live in Dubbo and my recommendation would be the Midstate Caravan Park.
It is situated close to town on the Newell Highway heading towards Gilgandra.
Short walk to the local railway bowling club.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Is there still trouble about in Dubbo or has it settled down a bit now? should we be extra cautious?
thanks

Go to the zoo close to opening time when the animals are more active and you'll also be able to hire a golf buggy before they're all gone.. It's a long walk with a stroller or even with a walking youngster. You can drive around it in your own car if you want too.
Take a camera with a long lens on it. I got some good pics last year.

$4.50 to $5.00 for a pie is getting a bit rich though, and I think a sausage roll was about $3.00.

A couple of pies, a sausage roll, two cups of coffee, a couple of goodies for morning tea and a litre of milk came to over $30.00

We stayed recently at the Top Tourist Park on the opposite side of the road to the Big 4

Like turn right instead of left at the Zoo sign.

Was pretty good and barbed wire fence around it as well.

Has anyone got any feedback on Westview caravan park.

The big 4 has only one powered site left which is a drive through but you cant open the awning out(must be close to each other)

We stayed at Westview some years ago and it was ok I believe there maybe new owners since then.
Next door neighbour stayed at dubbo at the park next to the zoo and was robbed overnight in the month of august

The Peak Hill Caravan Park is excellent (70 ks south on the newell)

You're not far from where most trouble originates (note this is very different to where most trouble finishes up) in Dubbo if you stay at Westview. I also stayed there many years back but knowing what I know now, wouldn't choose to stay there or anywhere else in Dubbo again. Wellington Caves has a nice quiet park, Peak Hill also has what I would consider a safer park than any in Dubbo, both these towns are not that far from Dubbo if you don't mind a drive in and out. My personal choice is to stay at a noisy roadside camp up at Brocklehurst (9kms nth of Dubbo) and drive in each day, I contract work in Dubbo every couple of months and have used this option for many a year.

If you are travelling with friends, maybe look after each others camp whilst the other goes to the zoo. It will add a day to your stay but there is heaps more than just the zoo to see in Dubbo anyway.

Make the effort to have a good look around, as apart from the small element of trouble in town it is a beautiful region. If you ar not out crawling the street at 2am I reckon you won't see much trouble at all.

Cheers, Trevor.

The caravan park at the Wellington caves is very spacious and well set up. We were comfortable there for a couple of nights last September. Lynne

Hi Troy,

We have actually stayed in Dubbo twice

1. We free camped at Terramungamine (in camps 5) by the river for a few days - had NO issues at all, we went to the zoo (towed the van there as they cater for vans - ours is 23ft long!!) then towed back to the free camp.

2. We stayed at the big 4 near the zoo very expensive and they charge extra if you want a drive thru site, wasn't very clean either (amenities)

Cheers

We loved Dubbo, and as well spent two most enjoyable days at the zoo. However when we got to Dubbo we took one look at the CP we were heading towards (Poplars - right in town) and thought we couldn't stay there - right by the Highway and the bridge. All CPs are on major access roads to the town so we looked elsewhere. We spent a few enjoyable nights at Terramungamine, and i even cooled off by swimming in the river after each day at the zoo. We left the caravan there each day, as did the others; quite safe. It is a small free campground and it got packed out each night.

As Lynne says, the CP at Wellington Caves is very nice; quiet and spacious with green grassy huge sites, although on a bit of a slope. We stayed an extra night because we liked it there.

Knowing the reputation of Peak Hill CP i would have liked to stay there, but a bit far to commute daily and get to the zoo at opening time as the earlier the better before the animals go into the shade to sleep.
