Indash GPS for Oziexplorer

I tried searching but couldn't find and answer to our question. We have the AVNC from VMS installed in the dash. The replacement model has some kind of motorised system for roll out or tilting or something. Our roll out TV in the house car rattles a bit these days. It was a factory fit to fix a design stuff up. What a shame !!!!! No cost also. But it can rattle on dirt roads.

Our son wants an GPS that can run Oziexplorer. It doesn't matter if its a Windows or full Windows unit. But we are concerned about any motorised feature rattling after a trip on a typical corrugated road we all like to frequent.

We both have 100 series TD Landcruisers.

Any ideas on any indash GPS at all would be greatly appreciated. But preference will be for a fixed non motorised one.

Phil

Thenew VMS unit is motorised and if its anything like the car TV we do not want it. They may be okey for a whil but because the TV now rattles when extended we will not touch them with a barge poll.

But we will look at the Polaris ones.

Hi Phil,

Try Polaris. I enquired about them a few months ago and they told me that they run Oziexplorer. They're far cheaper than the VMS as well.

I have an in dash 7" remote screen (not motorised) that I use for camera and oziexplorer. I use a hook velcro strap to hold it up - the strap hooks onto the dashmat and I have some loop velcro stuck on the top of screen that it attaches to - it stays up on the worst corrugations. You can see a bit velcro on the top of the screen on this photo:

Phil I couldn't get to the car quick enough to check if it would fit in the dash. Yep. But I think the son would still like to play his DVS/CD/s and to fit that in the dash would mean the DVD/CD radio etc would go.

Shame. Excellent idea though.

Thanks

Nick sounds like the one to answer our request. Email already sent.

We have the VMS released last year. But the new one is motorised and if its anything like our TV in the house car it is not worth taking the chance. No motorise stuff thanks.

Lets see what Nick says.

We use an in-dash screen and it has been great for our needs. We have had it three years and it recently spent every day over six Months and 22000K travelling Aus mostly on corrugated dirt roads. It has not rattled to death. it runs off a laptop we have for the job running Ozie. We like to have a laptop along as we can do other stuff with it. It have three inputs. One foe the remote laptop screen, one for a DVD fee for the boys player in the back and one for the reversing camera which is activated when in reverse.

here's a few pics. Not sure if the picsa will work being a guest. if not the links will take you to Photbucket, that might work or I can email you them

Pics all fine. I may get our son to rethink about the screen. I know he will not go down the track of a laptop but you said about the lack of rattles may be interesting to him.

We don't want a computer of any kind in the car. Apart from the one under the bonnet that is. I worked on computers since 1970 and that's the last thing I want to see when on a trip. Its bad enough that my wife takes her mobile. Mines in the drawer flat and that's where it stays. No phone, no computer, no internet and best of all no phone calls. Freedom.

Thanks

FYI - Polaris is a rebadged Caska unit - Caska are cheaper again - though it will require some technical expertise and you don't get the Australian warranty so perhaps not worth the extra hassle. I purchased mine from New Zealand $700AUD for OziExplorer functionality, regular Navi software, iPod connectivity, DVD, bluetooth etc etc.

Mine is the double din unit with motorized tilt functionality. For corrugated roads I don't utilize any tilt, just have the screen in the 'home' position.

For $700 (even $1500) they are very good value.

I had a look at a similar box for audio system only. When closed it felt very solid and locked. Is this similar to yours?

Yes - it does 'lock' quite firmly when in the home position.

Looks like Caska have updated their models since I have purchased mine...

This may fit? No motorisation at all which will suit.

Maybe you can clear up something for me. We want to run Oziexplorer and for the life of me I do not understand how you get it to run on a machine like this.

How would I get Oziexplorer to run? No need for detailed info. Currently the program and its maps reside on an 8 Gb SD card and the VMS runs it fro the card.

Maybe its the same and the box "knows" when GPS is selected the card is used. ?????

The unit has an SD Card slot, usually used to run the Navi software - basically it is Windows CE and you just have to trick it into running Ozi instead.

In the model I have it doesn't handle SDHC which are the newer more common SD cards. It can only handle up to 2GB cards..which can be a pain for multiple maps - you just have to setup a card for each map set.

All this is based on my experience with the unit I have (1615) so no warranties :)

Hey All is fine. Its a new area for me.

I am also trying to get the biggest capability for the SD card. Ours goes to 8Gb but also has other software on it that when I removed it the unit wouldnot load the Ozi stuff.

Cannot be too hard though.

I have a very knowledgeable nephew in Sydney that I may be able to drop in and see next Monday. He amy know a bit about Windows CE and give me a few hints. The other thing is getting it to integrate with the cars audia etc wiring.

I wonder about your choice of the word "trick".

Is there a kind of menu or applicatio loading system on the basic box that you enter or select the application on the card for GPS?

A real nivice here. But I know windows down to BIOS level. Even wrote my own bios back in the 80's because MSDOS is full of errors and still is. But Windows CE - hmmmmmm.
