As the man with the big white beard is coming soon,i thought i might invest in a 4WD driver training course for my wife. She is still wondering what that second lever near the gear stick does. Can anyone recommend such a place for beginners, but is still quite challenging around the Hunter Valley/Newcastle area.

Membership in 4x4 clubs sometime includes training, usually very good training and is included in the cost of memebrship. Not only do you get to do your course but you also get the benifits of joining a club.

The TLCC (toyota land cruiser club) provide excellent training that is VTAB certified, and its a great club.

as mentioned by others joining a club could be good, in the hunter valley there are a few options around, out of town 4x4 offers driver training, includes things like beach driving etc from total beginners up.

the LAND ROVER club in the hunter valley has a very good reputation and has it's own lease with tracks and driving courses camping facilities etc. and no they don't all drive landrovers!

hope you find something fuin for the other half at Xmas
