I have just found out about 3 stores closing their doors, Penrith, 7 hills, and I think the other one was Orange/Dubbo ?? (NSW) Wonder what's going on there. I went to Penrith a month or so ago and found them to know virtually nothing about what they were selling, when Scott was there I could ask him anything and got an answer but he left and he was replaced. Wonder if all of the stores are in some sort if financial difficulties ?? Have to wait and see unless some one else has more info .Regards Steve

I guess ARB's marketing and merchandise is more successful

An example:

Which of the two has a greater number of bull bars on the road/ tracks?

I had heard sales are down for TJM and they have recently began production of they're bull bars in China.

Personally I'd rather have my bull bar manufactured in Aus!

cheers

Time to buy some ARB shares hey fellas. Although ARB is getting more and more of there stuff manufactured in Thailand now, hopefully the quality wont decrease.

I have found ARB staff to be condescending & arrogant. If you haven't got a 6" lift & lockers, they don't want to know you!
On the other hand, I have found TJM staff to be helpful.

shame that you have found them "condescending & arrogant". the products themselves are very good as is the company, its just a shame that the store managers and staff dont deliver a service to the same standards and quality of the products. afterall the sales staff is the only real interaction with the company by the customers. I have visited quite a few ARB stores and most are quite helpful, the odd one has been rude and uninterested in my money.
however i would have thought if you didnt have a 6" lift & lockers that they would love to sell you some!
My local TJM megastore doesnt know what customer service is. didnt even want to give me a price on some lightforces when i asked, they didnt have a price on them, but they ended up being "around $400"- a firm price would have been more helpful to my query.
to sum it up, i dont think that there is a valid argument of which stores are better overall, just perhaps which stores in individual towns have the best staff.

"I went to Penrith a month or so ago and found them to know virtually nothing about what they were selling"

That sounds about right Steve.
It's because they didn't know what they were talking about.
Same goes for big camping shops like Rays & BCF.
I think they all poach their salesmen from Macdonalds.
Our local Opposite Lock gets then from Hungry Jacks & ARB gets them from KFC.

I agree - TJM here in Adelaide did not know what they were talking about when I went in to buy a tyre deflator / pressure guage !

Never been back there since !

Real sorry to hear that you didnt receive any proper service over something as straight forward as a tyre deflator/guage!!
If I can encourage you back into the store or even offer you a small gift as some sort of compensation, I would appreciate the opportunity.
I pride myself on both my staff and I knowing what we are doing but it would appear that we have not meet your needs.
Please ask for me personally (if I am around and not out bush somewhere!) and I will try to make things right.

I called into TJM in Nailsworth last week as I was surprised to see the store open following the postings on here previously. I was after info and prices on Maxtracks and the salesman was very helpfull and courteous. Didn't purchase then but will do next time I'm back in the big smoke.

That won't happen here in Mackay. TJM back their customers and the community so well here that they have a great support base.

In Mackay, ARB have made a bad reputation for themselves through bad workmanship (couldn't install a diff lock properly to save themselves and my Patrol caught fire after they wired a winch up wrong) and Opplock are still to get their service right after 3 trips to them for 3 seperate things resulting in 3 seperate order cancellations (only go there because I need add ons to their gear).

However there is a lot of competition from online stores and independant retailers that is bound to hurt some of them.

Maybe a restructuring event due to some franchisezes's (?spelling?) not providing the level of service demanded by their domestic (and commercial) customers?

Time will tell but I think it would be terrible for the industry for it to continue.

Regards
David

That's ARB Qld wide unfortunately, no Idea about customer service in the slightest and the reputation is well deserved. I Have noticed UV4X4 with the same logo as ARB and the same service.

Like Grungle i only use them out of sufference.

Just to balance out some views,

I am in Qld (Nth QLD) and our ARB gives tops service and backup.

Out of the three well known 4wd outlets, they stand head and shoulders above. And yes I have had dealings with all three and no, there is no affiliation

Without wanting to say too much..... From a reliable source: A while back TJM were taken over / sold to new owners. The new owners changed quite a few of TJM' business practices including some of their product distribution and arrangements with some resellers and suppliers. It would seem that this may not have been the best move. Reportedly, the old owners are looking to purchase the company back.

I think by now with the mods that I've done to two vehicles (nothing extreme) that I probably saved ARB from the GFC....... Gotta say that I haven't experienced the problems with staff that you guys seem to and I know that the guys in the store here in Canberra have been around for what seems like donkey's year...no kids on the counter at all. No mechanics either but these fellas seem to know their stuff.

TJM are not closing down.
They previously had those 3 stores in Sydney owned and run by head office but are now looking for independent franchisees to run them so that they can concentrate on manufacturing and distribution.
This will then make them the same as the rest of the country where the other 40 odd stores are independently owned and operated. Hopefully this will lead to better service - like when Scott was there!

Thanks Greg for filling us in on what's going on, better then the guessing we are all doing. Prior to Scott leaving the service from TJM in Penrith was great, I have had a suspension lift done by the Penrith store and have bought numerous parts from the store and always found Scott & his wife to provide excellent service, when he left the service and knowledge of the store products went downhill. I went into the store prior to it just closing to follow up on some Staun air deflaters and I swear to god the young bloke had no idea what I was on about and had to ask the bloke out the back, then went searching through the catalogues (the very few they had) to look for a price then had to ring another store to see whether the store even stocked them, told them not to worry was in a hurry and had to go, I didn't need to go anywhere but didn't want to degrade them in front of other customers. I pass the store everyday on my way to work so hence is very close for me to get my parts, so hopefully they will reopen and the service and knowledge will return. Thanks again for the update. Regards Steve M
