Budget $40K tops, would prefer $30K; Diesel Turbo, Automatic, nothing over 150 000Km, I don't tow, 2 adults + one child (almost teenager).

I like the torque of the diesel.

looking for a long range on fuel aswell.

Looking to do the Simpson etc & have it as a shopping trolley aswell.

Cruiser GXL I drove was the 4 speed auto - did not have the power I thought it would. Is the 5 speed auto much better ???

Prado GXL I like very much - but I want the D4D motor - maybe just a tad over my budget.

Landrover Discovery ? Don't reckon they have the storage room & questionable reliability ??? My brothers early model Discovery has no power.

Has the Discovery 3 got much more room ? I presently have a RAV 4 - does the Discovery have much more room than the RAV.

Jeep diesels ??? How reliable are they ? Prices are good ?

Mitsubishi Pajero: Had a go of one in the bush - is the ABS always noisey on them ?

Thanks if you can assist my mind in deciding.

Beddo

Your would post would drive Albert Einstein to drown himself in a swimming pool of alcohol.

Duuuuuuuuuuuuude! please get 'out there' and do some hands on research/testing yourself and then come back, maybe, with a specific question or two if necessary.

I have driven a Ranger diesel dual cab manual, plenty of go, the clutch does not like heavy loads with offroad work, dirt roads in 2WD you can get the rear end loose pretty quickly - but put it in 4WD & it is very neutral & goes great. Have not tried an auto in diesel - might have to.

The Landcuiser is about as good as you will get for 4x4 performance in that price range, Maybe you could look at a petrol if you want performance.

Petrol a little bit thirsty. I had a V6 Prado 98 model, did not have the get up and go that I expected for the amount of money I had to put in for fuel. Diesel my preference here. I drive diesel Prados a lot at work, they suffer with lack of ground clearance at front, particularly if it has a Toyota bullbar fitted (grader blade). would be good with a 2" lift & an ARB bar fitted.

Beddo, You have just got to get out there & put bums in seats. If your partner likes a certain type of car & your main priority in life is to keep her happy...."Happy wife equals happy life" Then if she enjoys the auto diesel GLS Pajero T/D then buy it. If 80% of driving is black top & general cruising the Pajero is the go, in extreme 4WD low range conditions it will scrape where the cruiser & patrols won't due to it's Independent suspension. However around town it's suspension beats the others hands down for stability and a non wollowing feel. The driving & comfort ratings of the Pajero makes it one of the best 4WD around. Noisy ABS....I had the NP (now an NT) & never any noise from the ABS!!!! The NS model T/D Pajero has/had (depends whether it has been fixed on recall) with the carbon particulate filter which picks up the unburnt fuel in the exhaust which activates a warning light on the dash....in some vehicle it kept coming & staying on requiring a trip to Mitsubishi dealer but easily fixed . If you want reliability don't touch Discoveries. The 3 ltr Patrol diesel is affectionately called a "Grenade" it can go bang without warning prompting an expensive motor rebuild...numerous Patrol owners have a class action against Nissan. The non turbo diesel cruiser is a great vehicle but when you go cruising take a newspaper with you to cover up the headlights so it won't see the hills coming up!!! A dual cab could be the go but you just have to get out there and drive everything. Ask the dealer can you borrow the vehicle for awhile...hook up the camper & go for a drive.

Ditto, I am shopping for ute too, the other don't go so well anymore. They are advertising the Ford Ranger 3.0TD dual cab ute in today's courier mail drive away brand new $33k, unbelievable.

That said, in my shopping around I got drive a work Ford Ranger, sure the engine was great and the inside was like a bus but I hated the seat, enough to cross of that option (though we are all built differently so you gotta sit in them to see if it makes a diff).

Of course I am not saying you should buy a vehicle cause you like the seat as there's lots you can do to them, but if you're paying over 30k I don't think you'd want to have to do much and it makes a difference to like the seat and be able to see over and around the corners.

the 4 speed gxl cruiser feels a bit "soggy" for lack of a better word, I know I have one. Dont underestimate it, it has plenty of go.........The 5seed auto would be better, but you are paying lots more for it. On the highway i get 11L/100kms, i am happy with that, my 80 td just sold i was over 15/100

mine cost $36k + $2k transport from qld to wa. 2001 GXV TD with 164000km, 1 owner ex con, bought it three months ago.

as far as a DIESEL cruiser goes, 250000kms is still good kms to buy.

The 4 speed was a bit soggy as you say, unfortunately I missed a diesel 5 speed auto for $38K the other day.

Pajero that I drove made noise with the ABS operating going thru some tight switch back which had the front wheels in places lifting. There was a lot of clicking & clacking from the front.

Hi Beddo

Which 30k diesel do you like the torque of - not one of them matches the 4800 petrol patrol which can cost a lot less ?

Many people make that mistake without even looking at the brochures and the engine torque power curves - its sort of assumed , and backed up with colourful advertizing.

The patrol has 420nm at 3600rpm buts holds that right down to still exceed 380nm at 1000 revs , the D4D you would prefer cannot match that at its peak let alone when the revs drop below about 1500 and it goes off turbo.

You have to move to the 100 series 151kw 430nm max engine to equal the Patrol and then your still not going to keep up with it as when the 100 series has run out revs the Patrol keeps going to 5200rpm and 185kw.

Ok, yep you'll have more torque, but you have an extra 1.8 litres, my pay packet could not afford that. Sounds thirsty to me. The Prados I have driven offroad a lot & the 3L diesel auto goes well & the economy of the diesel will make the commute easy & also give me a long range for those adventures. Looking at doing the Simspon.
For the performance I'll up in my old 1969 XW 302 - classic.

Might look into LPG figures for some of these large litre vehicles. My only concern is how many Km's will the motors do compared to the diesels & how do they go with water crossings (I guess diesels are pretty prone to water aswell with all the electrics now too).

Cheers Beddo

Thirsty all right Beddo - but not more costly !

Many studies have now come to the belated conclusion that costs differ little , one pays for fuel - the other in depreciation and service costs.

Its interesting how we individually approach these things - I smiled recently when I got a huge expected tax bill - my brother nearly died and related how happy he was at getting a refund.
The difference is that I had a years use of a lot of someones else money , whereas someone else had use of his !

Engine life can be expressed as an equation ELF - Engine life factor - essentially larger engines win - I wouldn't do the calcs on a 3lt diesel if you like to sleep well.

All the best with it though , none will have much of an issue with the fairly short run thru the Simpson.
