Jayco Expanda New rear bumper and spare wheel carrier.

The spare wheel on our Jayco Expanda is mounted on the front of the van between the A frame, as shown in the picture. As you can see the tyre sits extremely low, when you have to negotiate the steep driveways the tyre will bottom out, as you can see there is damage to the wheel bracket.

I have decided to move the spare wheel to the rear of the van; I will need to make up a new rear bumper. I will be using 100 X 50 x 2.5 Duragal RHS for the rear bar and I will mount to the chassis of the van.
The van currently has 14 inch alloy road wheels, I will be allowing for the rear wheel carrier to hold a larger 4X4 wheel for future upgrading of tyres and wheels.

I will be purchasing the rear wheel holder from astss see attached photo, this will be mounted to the rear bar using square U bolts, I will mount the tyre to the centre of the van which will block the number plate. I will move the number plate and light onto the rear bar. By using the U bolts will allow me to move the tyre left or right if the need requires. Eg another wheel carrier or jerry cans for water? astss

Have you considered the effect this will have on the van's ball weight. A quick look at the Jayco site Expanda Specs
shows that most of the models are either just at or even well under the recommended 10-15% of gross weight. I could never understand why my ( now deceased) Image Could Not Be Found2000 Jayco Outback Eagle had the rear bumper bar and spare wheel protruding so far out the back of the vehicle, until it was pointed out to me that it was designed to take as much weight as possible OFF the ball weight for that model.

There are many things to think about.
1. Will the expanda part clear the spare when fitted. Most expanda types
have the wheel on a carrier at the rear that is hinged. Look at expanda's on
the net for this idea.
2. What will this then do to the ball weight and van balance.
3. Fitting larger wheels will create additional stress on all vans components.
IE. Both suspension and axles plus bearings.

I suggest that you enquire off the manufacturer what is possible with your rig.
Other than that you may be able to adjust the present frame to suit better.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Hi Dodger

Yes I have done all my measurements with the rear bed down and I have good clearance, I have also allowed for a larger wheel. I have a friend that has the 2010 model Expanda and his wheel is mounted on the rear. I have looked at everything on his van and it is identical. (That’s where I got the idea from) See attached photo. I will allow for the wheel to be moved.
