WHAT IS A HF RADIO WORTH??

Submitted: Monday, Nov 03, 2003 at 21:46

Stuart

I recently purchased an 80 series cruiser that has 3 two way radios,AM, UHF and HF. After some thought l decided that the HF radio was not of any use to me, so l have decided to sell it, so l was hoping someone could give me an idea of what a fair price for it would be. It is a Codan-type 6801 mk2 ssb transceiver, and it looks like it belongs in a museum(it is about the size of a VCR)and the arial is a 6foot multi-tap terlin outback. Any suggestions on what would be a fair price would be greatly appriciated.........Stuart

Stuart,
About $20 want to sell it? Just kidding, not to sure, depends on condition, number of channels etc etc an HF radio set, auto tune antenna etc etc new is about $3500 work back from there. You can phone up the company on the multi-tap and ask as if you want to buy one, that's one way of doing it. Keep the shiny side up

Hey Martin, You will have to get rid of the picture of the red patrol and get a newer version of the 3 litre beast.
Enjoy Sunday?

Yes you are right, I had mentioned this as yet until I had a digital picture, plus maybe an accessory to mention apart from the factory bull bar, and two new Pirelli Scorpions (yuk), sorry my opinion only.Keep the shiny side up

Hi Stuart,
To use that old saying "are you buying or selling, my son?"....
In both the case of the HF and the antenna, it depends on what channels they are set up for. Extra channels in the HF require a crystal and a pair of coils for each, plus tuning; big bucks, but if it has the VKS-737 network channels and a few rfds channels already in it, then it's still worth a few bucks. But the 6801 mkII is still a pretty old and humungous unit, dating back to the 70's, but nevertheless, they used to work quite well. If it doesn't have those channels, then it may cost more than it's worth to set it up.
Terlin flog a multitap antenna with all 4wd net channels and some rfds channels for around $330-400 new, depending on how many taps.

This may give you an idea what a secondhand one is worth.
Good luck,

And I thought that my Codan 6924 was old!! Mine is a 1969 model I think.

I bought it in pretty good condition off a mate for $500 ($250-$350 would have been a more realistic price) I then took it to specialist who serviced it and added more channels(another $350). I have ten channels and just use a plain wire aerial. A terlin multi tap aerial would cost around $400 new.
So if your radio is still in good nick it could probably sell for around $150- $250 and you may get $50 for the aerial. But I don't like your chances. These 25watt sets are pretty old technology and most HF users want the latest stuff!!
Cheers, Willem

Actually, the 6801 MkII is a full 100W unit, and will work up to 16MHz - it's a pretty competent unit, just big and a bit old. If it's got the channels, and you don't mind stuffing it away when not having skeds (a bit big to mount in the usual places), then it'll still do the job.

Yep....I've done a bit of trading to get my current radio setup.......its actually a give-away proposition. IF it had useful channels and taps on the antenna to suit it would be worth $100 tops IMO. IF it did have the aforesaid taps in the antenna, the Terlin would be worth a lot more than the radio !Why I am here looking at this screen ?

Gday Stuart,

I noticed from another response from you that you own a Jayco Eagle Outback camper. Can you please read my question that I posted this morning about the fridge. Can you shed me any light to perhaps what might be wrong.

Thanks...Stolzy
