Mr TLC

Hi All

Have limited time to travel, would like to do Cape York but can't get more than three weeks off work. thinking of putting the 4WD & Camper Trailer on a train to Cairns flying up and then make the drive from Cairns to the Cape and back again. Has anyone done this if so any recommendations on who you got to ship the vehicles??

I sent a car from Melbourne to Mackay (QLD) a few years ago via road transport & it cost $1,200.00 one way.
Not sure of the cost via rail but I bet it aint going to be cheap.

Cheers

Was a thread on this some time ago and from what I remember they would only take empty vehicles maybe a road transporter would be the go.

Trains arent running very far in Mid north Qld at the moment.

Something about water washing the lines out I heard.

LOL

one problem you have is that a lot of freight goes UP and not much comes down so you will pay the higher rates going up, maybe concider it just going back to cut costs ....
Darwin is like that, expensive to get up and cheap going down ...

If you belong to a 4wd club see if any other retired members would like to drive your rig up and back and have a few weeks in Cairns while you are up the Cape.

Hi Mr TLC.
Back in the 80's a friend of mine put her car on the train from Adelaide to Perth. She was moving to Perth. The petrol tank was drained and she had things stolen from it.
We work on a potato farm & we send certified seed to QLD. Sometimes truckies have come down with a load of something and are desperately in need for a load to take back. They ring us to see if we have any potatoes to go.
I'd be happier with your Rig on a back load for a reliable truck driver.
I think perhaps you might think of going earlier. The way QLD is going from Cairns up just might become an Island!
Take care, safe travels.
