As we are looking at travelling Australia, I want to take a tinny along on top of the landcruiser. Any suggestion on size, brand, hull type of tinny?? Will have a custom boat loader. I have done a little research and come up with 3.85 Quintrex explorer or the 3.7 or 3.85 see jay Nomad. My wife and 2 kids will also want to come fishing at times, so need something very stable. I will need something that will enable me to fish in the sea/bays when weather permits. Any suggestions on motor size/brands?? I have read that 18hp tohatsu is a good match to any boat hull of this size. Any info would be appreciated. Cheers. John

Hi John

I have a 3.7 Allyctraft with a 15 hpTohatsu which as served me well for many years. Great for two people but by the time you add the two kids and allow for the tidal run that occurs in some areas I would suggest a 25 hp engine would be more suitable. A bit more weigt to lug around but I reckon it would be worth it.

Cheers Teza

I use to own a 3.85 Explorer.Very stable little boat with a good beam siutable for sheltered water only in my opinion. I like to fish Eucebene so sold it and brought the same hull in 4.2 which is to big for roof topping.I dont believe any car topper is suitable for the sea. The 3.85 could only handle waves up to about 60cm where as my 4.2 has been in 1.2m waves in Euc and handled it OK.

We have a SeaJay Nomad 3.5 with 15hp Yamaha, and also have the custom boat loader.Big enough for 2, a bit of a squeeze when we have two kids onboard as well, but doable. The Nomad is a very stable hull, almost flat bottom with a V bow.

Carries well on top of the vehicle and easy to load/unload by me alone.

Had it for 5 years only very happy with it, going down to Buckenderra rfor easter.

Hi
I have a 3.8 Bermuda "v"hull with high transom and sides, excellent little boat and has welded thwarts fitted unlike some of the smaller Quinnys.
Powered with a 15hp Merc (usa build)

Used to have a 3.8 Explorer, again excellent stable boat but a bit too heavy for car topping at over a 100kg.
