The child bride, acting in her alter ego as the local Librarian, has asked me to pick
the brains of those that read the mags. She is keen to increase the number of such
things available to readers & would like to know which ones you find entertaining , ones that you subscribe to, or read regularly. Yes,I know there are many out there.
The Library currently gets Outback,On The Road & Overlander. Which of the Caravan
mags is worth a read ?. Please have a shot at this as the dear old thing brings home
my beer tickets every fortnight & I must offer all due support..:)))).......oldbaz.

oldbaz,

Used to subscribe to 4WD Monthly/Action and Overlander and then they started to rehash so changed the subs to Outback and Australian Geographic.
Not going to renew my subscriptions though even with the free offers. ;)

I never miss an issue of On The Road magazine. My favourite for many reasons. Read one, and see what I mean.

Not much help to you Baz,

I gave up on the mags in our local library (too lousy to pay for them), but they seem long on advertising and short on worthy articles IMHO.

I am even going to quit subscribing to Readers Digest after 40 something years for the same reason.

The information on EO seems endless and always worth while sifting through for assistance, I reckon the mags are going to be hard up against the might of this type of forum for info and entertainment.

I am still subscribing to a local (WA) 4WD mag which is published quarterly, it has been growing with interesting articles each year for quite a while now - it is 'The Western 4WDriver' - only a small sized magazine, but fights above its weight...

Good luck on your mission

Regards - Phil

I get 4x4 Australia, Campertrailer Australia, Go Camping and On the road.

I have tried the ones with "ruthie" in like 4wheel touring, but found them to be pretty lame.

G'day,
I was a subscriber to CamperTrailer Australia - but I think 24 months is long enough for subscription to just about any magazine, as you do notice articles come around again. The guy who writes this one does have a beautiful turn of prose - but eventually I find I need an answer to a question NOW - and I turn to forums like EO.
CamperTrailer Australia is good if you're looking for comparisons on new Campers, but after you've made that decision, you realise that half the magazine is no longer worth reading!
I 'm probably an random magazine purchaser now...
Hope that helps a little to you getting your beer tickets OldBaz!!
Cheers
Corrugate

Hi
I basically agree with everything that has been said previously. I have tried most of the 4WD magazines and probably have a subscription to cover at least two lifetimes to 4WD Action because of all the 'Deals' offered to subscribers. Out of all of the magazines on the market, I believe 'On the Road' is probably the best and has the most consistently good articles to keep the readers continuing interest.

I had subscriptions to both of the big Caravan mags and 4x4 monthly.

The Caravan mags have deteriorated into just advertorials and are quite often guilty of posting incorrect and sometimes dangerous information.

Also their Caravan reviews were always complimentary and rarely found faults with any of them and we all know how incorrect that is dont we.

The 4x4 Monthly got to be the same and got sick of Roothy and references to tinnies. (Not the boating kind)

So now dont bother Lots of info to be found by using Google and researching what I wanted myself

Overlander has been quite good but I have bought them but never subscribed

Thank you for the responses. I agree, with the exeptions of On The Road & Outback, that most mags dont offer a lot to the 4wd driver or traveller. My Librarian is keen to try a Caravan mag & will probably add one to the list. Sites such as this one & other
internet resources are a much more rewarding experience when researching such
topics. I do understand that the advertising situation is very restrictive on such mags
when it comes to critique of advertised products. Anyway your thoughts are most welcome & appreciated...this weeks drinking ticket is ensured...:))))...oldbaz.
