Info on Solid Tow Hitch Used to Tow a Sierra

Submitted: Tuesday, Dec 02, 2003 at 08:06

Brendon

A friend of mine has asked me if I knew how to set up a solid tow hitch to the front of his Sierra so that he can tow it behind his Winnebago.

I do not know, but I said I would try and find out. He has been asking around without success. He has a tandem trailer, but I think it weighs more than the Suzi. It loads up the winnebago a fair bit, so he is exploring alternatives.

I assume a firmly mounted "A" Frame is all that is needed. Does the steering then naturally track where the car is led, or do you need to restrict the steering in some way.

I know there will be some experienced old hands out there. Any help will be appreciated.

Brendon,

If he has a trailer then use it. Easier if he has to reverse it and a lot less bits turning and wearing out.We have so little time to enjoy our land

Yes, that's certainly an option. And for long trips he is still looking at that. May need to downscale the trailer. For shorter trips, the trailer option does become a hassle.
Finding a safe place to store the trailer, loading, hitching, unloading, unhitching and moving it around. vs Unhitch and go.

"A" frames are not allowed in a lot of states unless someone is behind the wheel.

One way is to use dolly wheels, where only the front wheels of the Sierra are off the ground, you are still turning the tail shaft, but it can be disconnected.

I'll look into the legal side.
Removing the tailshaft defeats the purpose somewhat as the aim is to be quick and simple. The dolly wheels are a good option. Thanks.
