dessert duellers? 693 31 10.5 r15 ???

Rowler

Hi Guys & Gals,
Has anyone had trouble fitting 31 10.5 r15 tyres & 15 steel rims to a 2001 hilux?

It has been suggested that they might rub on the front under full lock, I am replacing the original rims 16's & tyres 205 r16 & do not wish to increase the overall height of the wheel too much if I can help it. The hilux is a 3.0td ifs dual cab, as I will be towing a camper trailer when travelling & carrying fairly heavy loads on a daily basis on building sites during the week I didn't want to gobble up too much power with the bigger wheels. Due to the camper being new & being built shortly I will need 8 rims & tyres so the budget can only stretch so far.
Are the d/d 693 a good tyre, we dont go off road that much & no crazy stuff.
I can get them for $170ea fitted & bal. is this a good price.....

Any comments!

Thanks Rowler (dave)

Rowler,

Do a search of the Archive and you will see a few threads on this issue.

In short the answer is yes, 31s will rub on full lock with the suspension under compression, e.g. turning into your drive way. With my 'lux the rubbing was against the mud flaps, the answer was take off the flaps and the problem went away (except in exterme lock/compreesion circumstances). The down side of this fix is no mud flap, but with my side steps in place they pick up a fair bit of the mud.

Cheers

Rowler, I had some 30.5x 9r15 D693's on my hilux, was good, and also very close to the same diametre as 205x16.

I think the 693's are the Dueler AT's not the Deseert Duelers. I have had a great run with these tyres and yep, the price is good.

G'day
Had dueler 693's on the lux when I purchased it and could not wait to get rid of then. They are crap for a HT tyre. Great if there is no rain but a short shower will have you wondering.
I have a 99 3LTD hilux with 265/75R16 cooper st's a great tyre and far supiour to the 693's in my book. 31's will rub a little at the rear of the guard. Easy to cut the small (30mm x 40mm) piece of mud flap that they rub on.

Also have 245/90R15 centipedes for play, these only rub on the windscreen washer bottle after a bit of cutting.

31's are the got for your lux but I don't think the 693's are a good choice in rubber.

Goodsy.

Goodsy, They are not a HT tyre. Or do you mean they are no good on the highway?

Hi Goodsy. I'm just about to go down the same track with 265/75/16's Cooper Sure Track on my SR5 3.0TD. With regard to your comment re scraping on the guard is that in respect of the SR5 or std Hilux. The wheel arches on the SR5 may be more obstructive?? Any comments apreciated?? Obviously 'Goodsey"didn't read what you intended to do with your vehicle. I have just been thru the exersise & fitted 7x15 wheels with the 31"tyres to the Rodeo- similar type vehicle to you. Had the 693 (205x16") on before and got 57000km (including 8000km outback touring, the Cape, 4wd weekends etc) and had a very good run, so stuck with 693 on the new wheels. I think an excellent allround tyre- maybe not the greatest for rock hopping or éxtreme'work.
Just ensure they are the Aussie made 693- stronger sidewall than the Jap variety.
When I got mine last month- I had to wait til the tryes came from Japan. The Aussie tyres had been to Japan & back to Oz.
$170 is a good price (and about $50 for wheels- I got 5)
Have a good one,

Thanks Dave,

I have 205 r16's on my current navara for work & have found them very good also, they mostly do highway & on building sites most days, LT construction & they carry a pretty heavy load most days. I am quite impressed with them.
The Hilux arrives early in the new year. There seems to be the wide tyre or the thin tyre debate!

Thanks Dave....Dave
