River crossings in the suburbs of Melbourne!

Well the "anti-4wd in the suburbs" brigade would have bit their tongues last night. Our suburb in Melbourne's inner North copped well over 100mm of rain in less than 2 hours (about 150mm by my rain guage) between about 1:30 am onwards. Couldn't sleep with all the lightning flashing about, so I thought I'd better check out what was happening to the neighbourhood and go for a drive in the old Landy, recovery gear on board (didn't want to get the Paj wet. LOL). What a suburban 4x4 adventure!

Unbelievable!

Had to wade through the torrent flowing at the bottom of our street to check the depth before crossing- luckily only knee deep but flowing fast!

Waterfalls were cascading off retaining walls and 2 creeks that drain into the Yarra which are normally a trickle were absolutely raging. Newly layed turf was floating in chunks down the street along with wheely bins.

Could have even launched the tinnie on the freeway nearby and rescue the poor suckers whose cars were half submerged. Of course I didn't think to hitch it up when I first left my place.

It was certainly one of the most exciting 4wd adventures I've had in recent times. And to think, all those neighbours with Mum's shopping trolley could have proven the importance of having a 4wd in the suburbs with a fording depth of up to 600mm, but no, they chose to sleep on and miss out on the fun.

So to my question - does doing (responsible) river crossings in the middle of the night in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, on a weeknight looking for vehicles to recover say anything about a predisposition to 4wdriving?

Now, back to sleep

Mrs and I woke up to water pouring out the bedroom light into the middle of the bed. And downstairs, out the lounge and kitchen downlights... Lucky it is a rental, it has stained the ceiling and most likely needs repainting. We both complained about sleeping in the wet spot last night.... snigger snigger.

Here in the Blue Mountains you can watch the storms develop
and then rush off down to the coast to ruin the cricket at the SCG.

If it's raining you can see how intense it is or wide spread
and decide to delay a short trip or just press on.

Fascinating.

we had a bit a rain up in brissy today.
I actually voluntered to goto the local shops to do some 'shopping'.
theres a nice puddle that forms in a vacant lot that has to be emptied (danger to all those little kids out there). So being the good citizen that i am, i took a few runs though it.
My son gets just as much enjoyment out of it as i do!!
