Caravan Towing - Training

Hi all

My sister is considering buying a caravan probably 'mid-size, pop top', however, as her husband is somewhat older than her (and she is 64), she wouldn't even consider the purchase unless she can get some professional training in towing one, as she knows she is going to be the driver.

Very sensible woman, my sister. She realizes that towing is different to just driving, so she wants to learn as much as she can, so she can feel confident towing ... and the all important reversing.

She is only planning blacktop and caravan parks, maybe a few bush or free camps, but not "off road" as such.

I have done a search here, white pages, yellow pages, but can find no listing or info. Does anyone know if there is a company or organization between Newcastle NSW and the central coast (say, Gosford NSW), that teaches these skills?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Dave

Hi Bushwhackers,

Try googling "Towing Ed". They travel around different venues and have set dates.
Hope this helps.

Isn't it amazing that just anyone CAN drive a vehicle with a caravan or larger trailer without training.

I did as a young fella and got into all sorts of trouble before I learned the skills. We have a ginormous Goosekneck horsefloat, and I often tow a tri axle trailer full of cattle or sheep. No quals needed! I personally do have endorsed licence but the point is ANYONE can get behind a wheel of a very difficult set up and drive off.

A worry. ... and good on your sister! Thumbs UpThanks 0

So true Royce
I build boats & I am amassed at how many people buy a 7mtr 3.5ton craft on trailer & have never towed & I think its worse now as so many small vehicles have a large towing capacity working on the fact that the trailers brakes work, Trailer brakes have got better but the average boater does not travel or use it enough to keep them working

To Notso and all others,

I went to your Tow-Ed link, just the thing, I reckon.

They do courses at Tuggerah on the Central Coast NSW, which would suit her just fine.

Thanks to all for the assistance

Cheers, Dave
