Wet towels on windows and fresh air vents. I have only had AC for the last 2 yrs and the family survived OK summer Hols to Perth many times.
Eskys - the cheapest option are white poly boxes from fruit market with lids (I think they transport advocado's in them ?) Buy some adhesive backed aluminium foil from Clark Rubber and stick on box or standard esky, This foil stuff transformed my 3 way frig !! Keep fruit and vege(individually wrapped) in carboard banana boxes.
And don't forget the the trusty old waterbag.
You don't need all the expensive high tech stuff
Good luck

Fred, Use large blocks of ice in your esky, made with ice cream containers or 2Ltr milk bottles. These should see you through 3 days, although the esky will need to be in tip-top condition. Keeping your esky covered is also a good idea, as is keeping it out of direct sunlight. The milk bottle idea serves 2 ways, it stops everything in the esky getting soggy and when it thaws, you have extra drinking water. As for personal cooling, learn to live with it, we always did in the old days. Enjoy your trip. Happy trails, Mike.

To have a cool beer: stick your tinnies in an onion bag, tie a length of rope to it, fling it in the nearest creek for an hour. (Not recommended in croc territory)

Fred, what you need is an ice making machine. No there is more. You take an extra esky which you half fill with "dry ice" available from many fishing tackle shops. The other half is filled with plastic milk bottles filled with water and pre-frozen. In your food eskies you start out with other milk bottles full of ice. As these melt you rotate them through the ice maker. You will be amazed. As for air conditioning, place wet hand towels in sealable plastic bags and rotate them through one of the eskies.Good for temporary relief. Have a great trip, Mal.

Fred another cheap option is to purchase a $2 water pump spray (atomiser) lay on your bunk with as much skin exposed as modesty permits spray mist above person and when the H2O settles you will be chilled

cheers

the water bottle sprayer is also a good idea for travelling in spinefex country - to lessen the risk of exhaust fires
