CooperA/T Vs BFG A/T for Pajero NL

Guys (and girls) - I am shortly setting of for a round oz adventure (camper caravan and 4 kids)and in need of new rubber. The reality is that 25 of the 30000Kms will be on bitumen, and then when we get back it will still be mainly bitumen use. The quandry is that I want a capable off road tyre - but a good bitumen tyre - hence the toss up between the Cooper and BFG. I have seen many endorsements for the BFGs but not so many for the Coopers. An inspection of the carparks favours the BFGs as well. Any comments are most welcome.

Rod, I've been wearing BFGs on my Jackaroo for about 55000kms and am extremely happy with them. Road hold in in wet or dry on bitumen is first class and the performance off road can't be faulted. I've had them in sand, mud and snow but the performance is always excellent. Road noise is not a problem either. Oh, and no punctures since they were fitted. Happy trails, Mike.

mike you answerd well when you stated first class road holding in the WET which is often over looked. from my experience the all terrain's do an excellent job all round, although nothing is perfect.

G'day Rod from what i understand these are both excellent tyres however the coopers are about twice the price but also come with a warranty the BFG's dont (and can also cost you twice if you put a rock through one after 600km)... have fun.

I was quoted $247 for the Cooper ST (new model) size 235/70 R16 and $234 for BFG AT's, so price difference is marginal.Cheers

I have got the Cooper ST on my Discovery they cost $2.00 more per tyre compared to BFG AT. The Cooper is miles in front. However I couldn't get the size 235/70 R16 as suggested by Kev, I don't think that you can get that particular size I couldn't in Jan 2002. Nearest for me was 245/75 16. Check warrentees and insurance if getting a different size type from OE. I have all my extras noted on my insurance policy this gives me some protection. Cheers

I can only assume Coopers now do a 235/70/ R16 as I asked for a price on this size and thats what the dealer quoted me on. I will have to check with them next week. As you have fitted the ST's how many K's have you put on them? do you find them noisy on tarmac? how are they in sand when running lower pressures?. I am up for a new set of skins so would be interested to here your findings. I was keen to go with BFG AT KO's but heard there have been a few problems with the later ones splitting where the tyre meets the rim and prone to chipping by gibber rocks, most seem happy with the BFG's however, but theres always room for improvement eh!

The 235/70/16 is a Passenger construction, whereas the 245/75/16 is LT. There is about 3mm differance in the tread pattern and the load index is significantly different.

Coopers all the way. I have just fitted a set of Cooper S/T's to my Hilux Dual Cab and they are just unbelievable. Very capable off-road, and the added bonus is they are pretty good on the black top aswell, even on wet bitumen, these tyres grip.

I know many other people that have fitted the S/T's and have had nothing but praise for them. And the 80,000km warranty is also very attractive.

Do you find the ST's nosier on the road than normal AT tyres. I spoke to Coopers and they recommended I go for the Cooper AT's as I do about 50/50 on-off road, if they are quiet enough and grip on wet tarmac then I think I would rather go the ST as it seems to be a tougher tyre than the AT.

It depends on the type of bitumen used for the road.

I actually thought the S/T's were quieter than the crappy Firestone's i had on (which were basically slicks - and came with the vehicle)

but I haven't noticed much change from the Firestone to the Coopers in terms of noise

I don't notice it too much anyway as the 2.8 diesel isn't exactly what you would call quiet.

And from other people's accounts, I have heard they are quieter than other tyres of similar tread

Gidday to potential Pajero new tyre buyers,
Iv'e had Goodrich all terrains,on my Paj,never again but,Iv'e had a rock punch a hole through the tread of a brand new Goodrich,I mean you can have bad luck,if that had been the only problem,I would have worn it.
But;no it wasn't,I had three others let me down,by parting company where the tyre was joined in the Volcanizing process.
Sooo! enter Cooper ST,I do find them a bit noisy on the bitumen,but that's a small price to pay for their off road ability,which I find very good,be it rock,mud,or sand.
I tow a Kimberly Camper and have been in some places where we would have been in a lot of trouble [steep rocky climbs back out, ie. sharp trap rock]if we had not had the traction that the ST tyres provided.
I can honestly reconmend,that you will not go wrong with them,even if most of your running is on the black stuff.
