Well, the "Scroogemobile" C/t just went out the gate with it's new owner...& what a joy it was to own..... $2k worth of Oz built trailer with a $2k Oztrail top bolted on &
a few bits added. It did around 45k of touring in the last 5 years. Total repair costs..
..about $30 for shackle bushes. I didnt ask the world for it & sold in a day...new owner gratefully relieved me of all the useless camping junk I had accumulated as
well. So I guess I will just have to wear an annual capital cost of $400 a year...aint
life a bitch?. It wasnt an Ultimate or KK or Tvan, but it served the same purpose
very admirably, & a great example of how you can tour this wonderful land at low
cost. We are now training as old grey caravanners..:))))).....oldbaz.

Just migrating from one formula to another Baz - welcome to the vanners' club - still a great life but much more comfortable - will you still be on the dirt in the van ?

Hi Baz,
mate did you fit and aftermarket tranny oil cooler on the jack. I just brought a new heavier boat and was wondering if this is necessary on Sals Nullarbor

G'day Pete, no I havent. I'm hoping it wont be required. Van only weighs in at 1.3T
loaded. Time will tell I suppose. I'm fairly confident it will handle the load. Never had
any issue at 45 deg towing the C/t with 4 up in the Kimberley.
Question for you...have you any thoughts on the use of the "Power Drive" option
when towing ?...cheers....oldbaz.

Mate, at 1.3 t I would give it some consideration. When we brought the nullarbor I did notice a van in the back yard(double axle one) and they said that they only did the one trip to Melbourne in it. Regardless I had the auto serviced and the mechanic said the oil was burnt, not good for long auto life.
not to power drive, from the info I gleamed from the Jack Forum you use a bit more fuel when used but it spends more time in direct drive third and keeps the temp down. With the old boat (only 600kg) I use to use it in hilly terrain, and if I need rapid overtaking.
Mate It could be worthwhile asking that question on the Jack forum, but my advive would be to fit and aftermarket cooler to save grief later on, heat is the no1 enemy of autos, and its not and isuzu box but a GM one unfortunalty.
good to see the Jack still going well, mine now has 196000 ks and no major issues, the ce light is on so will most lilely need a new maf or EGR valve is seized.
But still gives good economy, recently done 337k on half a tank.
cheers Pete

oldbaz, for one awful moment I thought it was the Jack that had gone out the gate. Phew! You will see the sense in what you have done on the first wet afternoon that you stop for the night. Oh the sheer joy of moving quickly from a dry car to a dry caravan. If you are road siding the billy can be on or a coldie in your hand in less than 5 minutes. Much less if you are quick. I like the look of your itinerary. Some interesting dreaming material there.
Cheers,

G'day Kevin, no chance of the Jack going from my hands. Best $$ I ever spent.
I have no fears for it on that itinerary, just hope the van is up to it, although I'm
confident a steady pace will see us through. Need a little drier weather in some parts,
but that may be ok by May. Looking forward to being an old grey caravanner...tryout
weekend next week, weather permitting.cheers.....oldbaz.

There is no power drive in my manual 3.0L TD but there was one in the VY Commodore that I towed with previously. Its function was to change the number of revs at which gear changes took place. I always used it when towing. It improved the behaviour of the transmission. Less hunting for high gears.
Found out yesterday that our Coromal 420 pop top off road is still in the factory in Perth when it should be here. I'm trying to curb my inpatients.
